Post subject: Spammers back ??
Since 26th September there have been 114 new members, all with very suspicious usernames, just click on memberlist & sort by descending, notice they are all female & all profiles contain links to very questionable websites.
21 more of them registered since midnight last night.
For my forum I use a website called stop forum spam to check new members, this site has a database of all known spammers usernames, emails and IP addressses, & I checked some of these new members on this database & quite a few of them are listed as reported spammers.
None of them have posted anything yet though or even logged into the forum.

Thank you Adam for your post. I hope Admin will take action...
Adam - Sun Sep 30, 2012 9:32 pm

They just keep coming, 11 more since I posted, one of them has links to adult material as well.
Adam - Tue Oct 02, 2012 4:38 pm

54 more since Sunday.
Hope these bots don't decide to post all at once !!, there is now 196 of them !

Kanta - Tue Oct 02, 2012 10:58 pm

Time will only tell...
Adam - Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:40 am

Still awaiting from Admin to clear the forum...

Adam - Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:45 pm

Just out of interest, that amzee75 is listed 8 times on stop forum spam, all with different IP addresses, but the same email address & originates from Pakistan.

Thanks for the info Adam, do you know if there is some script to run on the server then it can clear the database by itself ?

Thanks ;)

Adam - Wed Oct 17, 2012 12:26 am

As far as I know there is no script to clear all these users from the database.
You'd have to delete them all individually.
You might be able to mass delete users through phpMyAdmin through your server's control panel, but would be an idea to backup the database first, they should be in the database table PHPBB_USERS
Setting new registartions to admin approval would stop them from registering but it's having someone check on a daily basis.
Upgrading the board from phpbb2 to phpbb3 is very complicated, but phpbb3 has much better spambot controls, I use one called sortables captcha which is very effective.

Looks like the trolls/spammers are back in the off-topic sction again ... :(
Adam - Mon Nov 05, 2012 5:32 pm

I pop on here everyday so have been letting Kanta know about these posts.
There's nearly 1000 spam users on here & they are registering on a daily basis so it must be a bot doing it.
Just beats me why they do it, surely they must have better things to do than set up these bots to spam forums.
They must know everytime they do it they'll get their posts removed & banned.

That's OK Adam, they just seemed to be more visible than usual lately, so thought I would add my two pence ... 8)
( ps - I also visit here most days to look around, even though I haven't logged in for a while before today, so I had already noticed you are quick to pick up these things .... )

Adam - Tue Nov 06, 2012 1:15 am

Another one's just attacked the Oxygene section & added 6 spam posts.
Dr_Jones - Tue Nov 06, 2012 7:47 am

Seriously, how hard is it to alter the register screen to prevent bots to register screen?
Kanta - Tue Nov 06, 2012 1:14 pm

As a Mod I can only delete the posts which I have done so far.

The rest is up to Admin...

Adam - Tue Nov 06, 2012 5:46 pm

Unfortunately with phpbb2 being outdated, there are not many anti-spambot plugins around for it.
This is a really good one which I use
https://www.phpbb.com/cus...captcha_plugin/

But it only works with phpbb 3.0.6 onwards

Dr_Jones - Sat Nov 10, 2012 7:47 am

Seriously, admins, do something about this. I have no interest in seeing the whole Jersey family posted here several times.
Adam - Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:36 pm

This isn't looking good.
Admin need to delete & ban these ones that are posting & I think it would be a good idea to disable new registrations until something can be sorted out to stop them registering.

Upgrading to phpBB3 would stop them as there are plenty of anti spambot plugins for it.
You'd lose the theme though & would have to replace the shoutbox with mChat.

Converting phpBB2 to phpBB3

Kanta - Sat Nov 10, 2012 2:29 pm

Hopefully all will be sorted...

Kanta, are you the only one moderating this site now? (while without admin powers) Where is everyone else? At this rate the group will be run into the ground. All that hard work to simply let the group go to waste.

Jon, I am here more regularly then the others. I have reported the issue so we won't "run into the ground." We are making progress. ;)

And there is my point. If you are here mostly, they should make you admin with powers to remove repeated offenders and spammers.

jarrepaul - Sun Nov 11, 2012 6:42 pm

+1

This is the only Jarre sites I visit. I would be devastated if it closed. I may not post much but I visit everyday in the hope of some eagerly awaited Jarre news.

Kanta - Mon Nov 12, 2012 10:47 am

Thank you for the vote of confidence. :D Let me put your minds at rest. At the moment, Beatle is on the case of the spammers.
