Albums & Other Releases - new Revolutions + Chronologie / Chronology LP in April ?

VinylScratch - Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:47 am
Post subject: new Revolutions + Chronologie / Chronology LP in April ?
I just came across a listing for a new vinyl LP release of Chronologie (as "Chronology"), supposedly to be released in April 2018:
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/...gy/hnum/8142681

Unfortunately you can pretty much bet that this is going to be based on the 2015 remaster... :(

Edit:
Revolutions also scheduled:

Finaero - Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:56 am

I wonder what kind of a misspelling and/or off-center pressing (e.g. Oxygene 3) this release will have. ;)
Dr_Jones - Mon Feb 26, 2018 10:25 am

Nice, so the digital skip in Chronologie 4 will be enhanced by a vinyl release which skips all the time because it's a piece of plastic.
Velodynamic - Mon Feb 26, 2018 4:40 pm

I just wonder about the quality of the Chronology master. Is it even possible to make it sound any less flat, harsh and distorded?
I think I'm okey with the 1993 Scott Hull CD release. "It is what it is" sort of speak. :)

shadow - Sun Mar 04, 2018 12:09 am

I never really got the problem with the sound quality of Chronology. Never found it bad, not even the '93 release some say even had a tinny sound. Might be an improvement a new remaster though.

Oh who am I kidding, make it twenty times louder and compress the hell out of it !

Finaero - Sun Mar 04, 2018 10:04 am

I got an unplayed copy of the Korean Chronologie LP last year, and it was only then that I realized for the first time in my life that (aside from the middle part) in Chronologie pt.4, the closed hihats actually don't play continuously through most of the track. So the mixing of that LP must have been clearer/different somehow for me to actually notice it for the first time ever (of course, now I notice in other version all the time but that's only because I'm aware of it now).

So for me, that's the best version of Chronologie (pt. 4, if anything). ;)

keran - Mon Mar 05, 2018 9:34 am

Apart from these questions of sound quality, it's still a good news.

We will soon afford to own a chronology LP with a decent price.

You know, only now did I actually realize that Revolutions is getting a re-release as well.

Place your bets! Will this vinyl edition of Revolutions (since it's most likely going to have Revolution, Revolutions in it instead of the original version) actually be better than the horrible bootleg that I bought off ebay for "science" (and to make that Discogs entry)? :P

chronos - Tue Mar 27, 2018 2:51 pm

Sure I heard there was some kind of legal dispute over the original version of Revolutions, causing JMJ to re-do it. As for the re-issue vinyl, I doubt the original master tapes would be used, instead the CD version will probably copied onto the vinyl.
Kanta - Tue Mar 27, 2018 3:11 pm

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it'll be the 1990 version of the song due to these legal issues.

Slightly off-topic: what makes you think it's a bootleg (and what makes it horrible?)

Finaero - Tue Mar 27, 2018 5:22 pm

Well, that's the thing. I think it's either a bootleg or a really badly made reissue in the vein of the Sony 2014-> JMJ re-releases (then again, if this bootleg really was made in 1999 as the eBay listings claimed, that might explain it).

All this based on the sloppily copypasted "Revolution, Revolutions" text on the label on the record itself and the back of the sleeve (which otherwise appeared to be identical to the 1988 pressings), not to mention the odd hand-written "matrix number" on the vinyl itself. As for the horrible part, the record was already full of scratches out of the "box".

Not to mention the complete lack of post-1988 copyright dates anywhere on the record itself or the sleeve.

(Never tried getting the "1999" Zoolook LP from the same sellers)

Preorderable from 'round here as well http://cdon.fi/musiikki/j...ition)-43830233 http://cdon.fi/musiikki/j...ition)-43830232

April, April...?

ChoccyUK - Tue Apr 10, 2018 7:11 pm

Did I miss something - what happened to the purple vinyls ? (amazon says they are black)
Finaero - Tue Apr 10, 2018 8:21 pm

In other words, it's like Sony managed to screw up the release even before the actual release. Wow.

Anyhow, someone seems to be already selling the new vinyl on eBay https://www.ebay.de/itm/J...ucAAOSwIo5azL4W

Velodynamic - Thu Apr 12, 2018 4:46 pm

Even though I prefer black vinyl I'll try out the Chronology ltd blue edition on CDON.
At the moment I don't see any other option and this is really confusing. :nico:
At iMusic they both (Chrono and Revolutions) seem to be 180g purple vinyls.
Somehow every time you're buying (or trying to) a new release from JMJ it's like buying the pig in the sack. :P

Finaero - Thu Apr 12, 2018 9:10 pm

Thanks, Kanta.

So I guess it's safe to assume that the actual releases will be on black vinyl. Or maybe there already are purple/&blue ones in circulation, which will become rare(ish) collector items...

... so, people, place your bets! What kind of Sony shenanigans can we expect from this one? Off-center vinyls? Dadwater mixing miracles? (Then again, that one's a given) Missing track numbers + names from the labels / back of the sleeve? Stay tuned!

Dr_Jones - Thu Apr 12, 2018 9:19 pm

They're probably going to use the Dadwater remasters which means Chronologie 1.1 and 1.2 are divided and all the usual problems.
Velodynamic - Fri Apr 13, 2018 4:25 am

Now I'm placing my orders at every damn place that announces these releases in different colors. Lets see what's turning up and what doesn't!
How hard could it be to sell them on JMJ's official shop and leave it with that?

Finaero - Fri Apr 13, 2018 6:31 am

@Dr_Jones: Damn, I had already forgotten about that. Not to mention the clock SFX starting way earlier than in other editions at the end of Chrono8...

But yeah, just got an email from CDON that the shipment of these records has been delayed.

Not expecting any colored vinyls to arrive (whenever anything will arrive to begin with) :P

It is. Part 1 says 11'01, not 10'51. Part 8 says 5'09 and not 5'33.
A tiny hope left that they maybe, just maybe had less brickwalled vinyl masters.
It feels nice to at least have the old Revolutions vinyl without Dadwater effects. :P

Herr Dunkel - Sat Apr 14, 2018 1:03 am

It's nice to have the back updated a bit (although I would have prefered the back of the Chronology CD remaster with the 5 people walking, an echo to the cover).

The typeface used for the word "REVOLUTIONS" is thinner than the original (that was nicer I think). "CHRONOLOGY" is slightly thinner too but it's not as obvious.

BUT they messed up the bottom of letters "C" of "MICHEL" and "J" of "JARRE" on Chronology. I just noticed it now, but it's not new, I just found out it's on the CD remaster too...

Come on now! They mess up both the audio and the artwork on purpose, don't they?

Finaero - Sun Apr 15, 2018 7:52 am

Discogs entries for the two
https://www.discogs.com/J...elease/11865300
https://www.discogs.com/J...elease/11865439

Really can't "unsee" the sloppily cut off "C" and (second) "J" in Jarre's Chronologie title anymore. :|

Other than that, they do look pretty sleek... here's hoping they won't sound that bad.

(Assuming that they'll at least sound better than the 2015 CD versions, but that's not saying much :P )

VinylScratch - Sun Apr 15, 2018 12:55 pm

If you zoom in on some of the pictures at Discogs you can read that they are indeed based on the infamous Dadwater remasters, as expected/dreaded.

I think it is high time for one of the audiophile reissue labels like MoFi or Speaker's Corner to get their hands on those original analogue tapes for a change...

chronos - Mon Apr 16, 2018 12:47 am

So, no need to waste money on them?? I have an original Chronologie L.P. (Not Chronology) Noted that the new album starts side 2 off with pt4. Tempted to buy Revolutions, but will it sound any different/better ?? (apart from the title track)

If you have the 1993 one there's absolutely no reason to get this new release. The audio is based on a very bad remaster

Finaero - Mon Apr 16, 2018 5:11 pm

I'm most interested in hearing how the Revolutions one compares to the "1999 bootleg LP". ;)

But yeah, I guess that aside from this release of Chronologie having a nicer inner sleeve than the other editions (to my current recollection), these editions can be skipped.

Velodynamic - Fri Apr 20, 2018 4:50 pm

So here they are. CDON's Chronology "limited blue edition" and iMusic.dk's Revolutions "30TH ANNIVERSARY PURPLE 180g".

The weight of the vinyls:
Chronology fr CDON: 146 gram
Chronology fr iMusic.dk: 148 gram
Revolutions fr iMusic.dk: 149 gram (despite the mention of 180g or "estimated 200g")

Both the Chronology vinyls are slightly off center but not by far enough to affect the sound.
Chronology "black vinyl" has yet to come from Amazon.

Finaero - Fri Apr 20, 2018 6:41 pm

Damn, guess I called it. :|
ChoccyUK - Fri Apr 20, 2018 7:25 pm

Seriously what is going on with this release?
I now have the ones from Amazon but today they claim the release date is May 4th and not yet available.

Finaero - Sat Apr 21, 2018 1:23 pm

Alright, got my copies as well.

For this weekend only, here's a quick comparison of the sound quality for Revolution, Revolutions from the 1994 Canadian CD, "1999 bootleg LP" and this 2018 LP: https://www.dropbox.com/s...SNQLxquzra?dl=0

That has sold me in to buying the Revolution 2018 LP! The last CD copy i bought was the gold border remasters, you can hear the hi-hat on the drums a lot clearer, sounds more lively too. Does the rest of the L.P sound any different?

Finaero - Sat Apr 21, 2018 8:43 pm

I'd say it's mostly about increased bass and treble with Revolutions. The Chronologie one also has the odd edits (the transition between Chronologie 1.1 and 1.2, Chronologie 8's watch part at the end starting earlier... but also a nice feature in Chronologie pt. 4 fading out later than in the pre-2010s versions).

Two more comparisons (Industrial Revolution pt.1 - with the 2018 one being the only vinyl version - and Chronologie 4 - all samples from vinyl versions) here https://www.dropbox.com/s...6hytClrt9a?dl=0

Velodynamic - Tue Apr 24, 2018 5:43 pm

Comparing Chronology 4 and 5 with the 1997 Chronologie CD (Scott Hull remaster) although the more saturated and punchier bass on the vinyl I still think the older CD sounds clearer, crispier and more well defined. The droid effect and solo near the end of Chrono 4 is drowned by everything else and the big string sound on Chrono 5 is a big mess. I can blame it partly on my cartridge and tube pre-amp which are creating a warmer sound and are less successful in emphasizing minor details. Probably also why Chrono 1 and the big organ opening on Chrono 8 is so darn powerful on this new vinyl.

I noticed recently that it's actually present in the 1993 South Korean vinyl edition as well: https://www.discogs.com/J...elease/10422548

(Oddly enough, the Brazilian version has the correct one)

Interesting... In a way it's somewhat comforting that it's not only the remaster that's messed up! ;-)

Finaero - Fri Jun 01, 2018 7:00 am

Exactly, that's one minus point off the Sony/Dadwater record. ... Which still leaves all the other negative points in there, of course. :?

A definite plus point, though: Aside from the text getting cut off, I'd say that visually this 2018 Chronology LP has the best packaging out of all the other Chronologie LP editions. Really sleek and stylish.

The Brazilian one still has the best-looking labels on the actual record, though, IMO. ;)

Herr Dunkel - Fri Jun 01, 2018 10:21 pm

I have not seen the new Chronology LP for real yet, but from the pictures posted above it looks really nice indeed.

I agree with you on the labels of the original Brazilian LP - the design is consistent with the original CD.

Did you notice that the Brazilian LP lists 4 tracks per side? Normally it should be A: 1-3, B: 4-8. Beside making each side very different in duration it breaks the continuity between parts 4 and 5 (yes I know, fade-in, fade-out to the rescue, but still... different from what the artist intended!)
