Hi,

Four new tracks by Jean Michel Jarre have been registered today at the SACEM web page:

https://repertoire.sacem.fr/resultats?filters=titles,parties&query=eon,jean%20michel%20jarre#searchBtn

EON Snapshot 1-4.

A new sound identity for another brand as happened with HSBC?

E.ON, maybe?

Dr_Jones - Thu Oct 31, 2019 9:12 pm

Interesting. I'm curious to hear it.

Making an iOS-only app when your target audience is Europe is akin to shooting yourself in the foot. Perhaps they are not interested in making money.

Market share
Android: USA: 42%, Europe: 72%
iOS: USA: 59%, Europe: ≈25%

(the terms of use page has no mention of Play Store whatsoever so I doubt an Android version is coming)

The brand new @jeanmicheljarre app called "EON” is available in the App Store. The app generates music with animations. Infinity is here. The only limit is your device’s battery. #EON#jeanmicheljarre#electronicmusic#jarre#jmjmoments

It's an fantastic app! I'm really loving the music and visuals. Not sure how much lasting appeal it will have, as it seems to be mostly quite subtle background music, rather ambient. But I love the fact that I've been listening for a couple of hours now without repetition.
It's a shame it's not available on Android as Jote says, but it's completely understandable for obvious business reasons.

Jean-Michel Jarre launches EōN, an endless stream of ever-evolving music

The app from the electronic music pioneer comes complete with continuous visuals.

Jean-Michel Jarre is at the forefront of artists using new technology for music, most recently in partnership with TheWaveVR, allowing users to experience his latest album, Equinoxe Infinity, in virtual reality. With technology at the core of everything we do today, Jarre believes that “this is the most exciting time in history to make music”. Commenting on the app, Jarre said “I named this project EōN as it best defines exactly what it is – an infinite musical and visual creation. Personally, I truly feel that EōN is one of my most exciting creative projects since my debut Oxygene.”

The story beyond Eōn

« EON » is an ancient Greek God associated with Time & Eternity.

The « time » represented by EON is infinite and unbounded in the sense of «ages» and «forever».
In cosmology, geology or astronomy, EON is often used in reference to a period of a billion years…

I named this project EŌN, as it best defines exactly what it is – an infinite musical and visual creation, which offers each individual a unique experience on its primary support as an App: on each device, and on each launch of the EŌN App, you will hear and see a unique ever-evolving orchestration of the music & the visuals. EŌN is a never ending, never repetitive, organic art-piece that will live & grow forever in everyone’s own singular space-time continuum, at the tip of their finger.

Here, in this limited edition box-set, I wanted to share with you two early audio snapshots that I recorded during the first tests of the music creation and one third snapshot created later on, only few days before the release of the App (on CD 2).

Personally, I truly feel that EŌN is probably one of my most exciting creative projects since Oxygene. I always wanted to create a music specific for each listener and which could constantly evolve. Here it is. EŌN is conceived & composed for your own eternity!

I had a very clear idea of the organic, living visuals I wanted to accompany my music creation, and I was very lucky to have spent some time in Tokyo at Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc (Sony CSL) where I found Alexis André and his singular visual world. Sony CSL with Alexis have conceived and developed an algorithm generating the endless flow of ever-evolving graphics, which like the music is never ending, nor repetitive. All the illustrations included in this box are visual snapshots of Alexis’ creative graphic work.

The algorithm and audio engine that orchestrate the music of the EŌN App have been engineered by Alexis Zbik & Vianney Apreleff from BLEASS after we defined the rules of the system together.

Jean-Michel Jarre launches 'infinite album'

French composer Jean-Michel Jarre talks about his latest project - an endless piece of music that will live on after his death.

Take, for example, his latest project Eon - a specially-programmed iPhone app that produces a dynamic, constantly evolving suite of music.

"It's like an infinite album," he says. "Each time you play the music, it's going to generate something special for you."

The album is built from seven hours of material the prolific musician composed, performed and recorded in his studio.

For example, he wants to use Eon on tour, allowing him to "respond and improvise to what the app gives" him in real time.

Aaaaand... it's gone.

This paragraph has vanished from the website. No mention of the box-set whatsoever at the moment.

Velodynamic - Thu Nov 07, 2019 9:01 pm

It's a fun experiment. My version sounds very ambient without any specific lead to remember. It's like listening to ever changing chaos and when you turn it off all is forgotten. I heard some Oxygene like mini-pops and wind effects for about half a minute or so. Otherwise a drawback is that it generally doesn't sound typically "Jean-Michel Jarre" at all.

In a near future I'll probably uninstall the app before it begs for more money.
"Jean-Michel Jarre can't afford the latest Ai assistance, please donate jada-jada..." :bravo:

I’ve kept EON running for some hours, and I find it impressive and intriguing. The tracks are quite diverse and there’s so much more than ambient soundscapes. Also the visuals are nice in the context. What I find most fascinating is that you never know exactly what the next track will sound like so it’s potentially very addictive.

Just iOS (so iPhone/iPad, obviously you can reroute audio either via analog cable or AirPlay to decent speakers) at the moment, although Android version is apparently in the works (coming mid-2020, ugh). I'm not holding my breath though.

I always wanted to create a music specific for each listener and which could constantly evolve. Here it is. EōN is conceived & composed for your own infinite journey! However, here, in this exclusive & limited edition Box, I felt compelled to «freeze» some of my personal favourite music moments during the entire creative process; audio snapshots that neither of us will never ever hear again… as EōN, the App, produces my composition in the form of infinite, ever evolutive music, abundant in variations. Now, keeping in mind that the magic of EōN is that it lives its own always-unique orchestration, on every device, upon every launch - inside this Box, I just selfishly wanted to capture a few audio snapshots for my own posterity… Which you happy few also get to share!

I don't think so.

I find this situation downright puzzling. This is a niche release available only for purchase at one place. And it goes for €300. Box-sets of "proper" JMJ albums (Oxygene Trilogy, Equinoxe Infinity, Planet Jarre) that were available for 1/3 or 1/4 of this price from many retailers have not sold out yet. This, however, is a "cat in a bag" (not even audio previews, and the description of the contents is very vague and mentions only CD2) for €300.

I doubt this will sell well (and thus I'm hesitating on spending that much only to see the price drop massively after several months).

I think they are simply trying to cash in on the "artsy-ness" factor - I mean the Souris Calle vinyls went for sth like €999 and they sold out, so... I don't think JMJ fans are the target audience of this release.

docklands88 - Fri Nov 15, 2019 6:57 pm

I have recently downloaded the app and I must say that initial impressions are really positive and I am quite impressed with Jean-Michel has achieved here. I hope that the app is updated in the future with additional musical options/variations to make it a truly infinite album.

Really impressed so far, however long-term interest is the big question for me. I'm keen to see if the replay value over the weeks and months ahead holds up (or if it becomes boring), if it does remain fresh and exciting then I'll really be astounded.

It's absolutely worth the purchase price for those of you who are on the fence.

Jote - Fri Nov 15, 2019 7:08 pm

The app may be worth the purchase, but the boxset... I don't think so. €100, €150 I could spend. €300 is in the insanity zone.
Dr_Jones - Fri Nov 15, 2019 7:33 pm

I agree with you. 300 euros is a lot, especially when you know the Equinoxe Infinity box was 80 and included 2 CDs and 2 LPs too. Who knows, if it doesn't sell out, they'll throw in a discount?

Looks like the first CD contains tracks (probably 2?) with experiments of an earlier version of the algorythm and CD 2 contains results of the final version.

Jote - Fri Nov 15, 2019 8:47 pm

Quote:

That's another thing that I suspect (I honestly don't see how it is supposed to sell well) and it is kind of stopping me from jumping on it right now... I have enough problems with "buyer's remorse" as it is.

EoN from Jean Michel Jarre is a cool app that in a cool way is a modern Music Album. Kind if the 2019 version of a CD. It's dynamic, ever changing and kind of unique version each time you play it.

shadow - Mon Nov 18, 2019 7:04 pm

On the one hand, I quite like the box set, but on the other... €300 is a lot and I paid less for the two Electronica box sets together and that was already really expensive.
But that box set ended up being four records, four CD's, multiple posters, USB sticks and much else that was in the set in the end.
I'll wait a bit and see what'll happen, but I'm quite unsure if I'm pulling the trigger on this release.

FIXED!

https://repertoire.sacem.fr/resultats?filters=titles,parties&query=eon,jean%20michel%20jarre#searchBtn

The "snapshots" have been renamed:

Snapshot 1 is now Snapshot 1 (part 1)
Snapshot 2 >>> Snapshot 1 (part 2)
Snapshot 3 >>> Snapshot 2 (part 1)
Snapchot 4 >>> Snapshot 2 (part 2)

And there is a new Snapshot 3 so everything fits now into the format of the box: One snapshot per vinyl with one part on each side (and for the CD 1) and a third snapshot for the 2nd CD.

According to this article

https://www.lexpress.fr/a...re_2108400.html

an update (due sometime in 2020) might allow one to save and share sequences. Obviously not audio, I'm pretty sure this will be just a seed number used for the random number generator, so that it can regenerate the sequence.

My thoughts exactly! "Eon" would be a better sell to JMJ fans had it included "classic" Jarre sounds. I too was thinking namely about Machine Run. Or the Ethnicolor/Zoolook/Diva vocal loops - they don't have a definite pitch so they could mix well with pretty much anything. Right now it just doesn't feel like Jarre (ok, except that ONE Minipops loop...)
