Hey

What's the difference between the 1987 and 1997 versions of the "Cities in Concert" version of Houston/Lyon (the one with Equinoxe 7 and Wooloomooloo as extra tracks)?

Or more particularly, do the mixes differ? Does the 1987 version have the same blatantly copypasted audience cheering noises all over the album as well?

(Aside from those noises, I still think that the 1997 Cities in Concert version of Rendez-Vous 2 remains the finest rendition of that track ever)

There were several very nice versions of the track:
1. Lyon radio broadcast version was perfomed with real orchestra but without space speech during glissando as it was in the Houston version.
2. Houston version - that version are on Houston/Lyon and Cities in Concert albums. Docklands version was almost the same as the Houston version.
3. PLD version is almost the same as Houston version also but with intro from the 1st RV.
4. Images version is based on above live versions but without orchestra and it's edited. Lost City version was a playback of the Images version.
5. EiC version is based on the Images version but some synth parts were replaced on a guitar and a bass guitar. Most significant changes were in the 3rd part of the track.

Oh, most certainly. I'd probably rate the CiC, La Defense, 2009-2011 Tour and EIC versions as my top 4 favorites.

(Might even consider the Images version superior to the original album one if it had the "RV2 Part 2" choir part twice as in the original, but eh)

This is my favorite version:

BTW...the main tune is more than 40 years old already:

AFAIR this is more or less the same arrangement as during the "Space of Freedom" concert. I always hated that filter effect on the Synthex sound.

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed my Jarre CD's to check whether I have every official release of albums in my collection. I was checking Wikipedia and to my surprise I found out, that there are different versions for CiC (and Revolutions, but that's a another topic) and that I only had the short version...

Maybe now news for you but in case you weren't aware:

1987 Original CD France, Germany Disques Dreyfus, Polydor 833 808-2, 833 738-2 long version, 11 tracks-
1987 Reissue CD France, Germany Disques Dreyfus, Polydor FDM 36147-2, 833 170-2 short version, 9 tracks SPARS Code: DDD
1991 Remastered CD France Disques Dreyfus 833 126-2 short, 9 tracks Serie digitally Remastered
1997 Remastered CD France, Germany Disques Dreyfus, EPIC FDM 36147-2, EPC 487377 2 long, 11 tracks 96 kHz/24bit technology by Scott Hull
2015 Remastered CD Europa Sony Music 88843024722 short, 10 tracks by Dave Dadwater

Got the 11 tracks version for 3 bugs at eBay, so not much of an invest 8)

So anyway, are there any other differences between the 1987 Cities in Concert (not In Concert) and 1997 Cities in Concert releases aside from the latter one having somewhat louder mixing?

(In other words, does the 1987 CitC have the same redundant extra audience noise loops as the 1997 remaster)

Nice.

And the audience noises?

(For example in Rendez-Vous 2: the 1:30-1:51 part, and again around 2:13-2:25, same with 5:56-6:08 and 8:18-8:34)

All noises are the same. Difference in DR and levels only.

I've read the tracks on original 1987, 1991, 1997 and 2015 versions might come from different concerts, that some were switched.
Can someone confirm this, or specify which tracka are from which concert?

I know that there's two releases originally that had the Lyon or the Houston Equinoxe 5, but other than that all releases are (iirc) always the Lyon version.

There's also the extended release, but they never bothered again with that one...
27-11-10: Ahoy Rotterdam
22-11-16: Heineken Music Hall Amsterdam

I have a copy of 11-track Polydor - 833 738-2, it's 71 min, I know there were 9-track releases. Do you know which one has the Houston? There were also 2 singles that had Rendez-Vous, Pt. 2 and 6 from Houston and Rendez-Vous, Pt. 4 and Équinoxe, Pt. 5 from Lyon, so I can compare the E5 on album to the single. I also have VHS audio rip of Lyon, but I couldn't find Houston yet.
