By "ReplayGain" I think you're alluding to things similar to the EBU R-128 "loudness normalisation" standard?

Basically, I'm amazed that any professional mastering engineer is still churning out squashed crap like Dadwater, because due to EBU R-128, pretty much *EVERY* broadcast or streaming medium now (radio, television, Spotify, YouTube, Google Play, etc etc - and most hardware MP3 players as well) all use "loudness normalisation" to basically make everything they play the same subjective loudness level. So you CAN'T master a track to make it sound "really loud", as it just gets turned down when played, and so just sounds crap (lacking in dynamics).

Yeah, and Dadwater does definately seem to be a dick!
The more I listen to Oxygene 3 (ripped from the CD to lossless FLAC, mostly listening on a Sony Walkman with nice MDR-1000 headphones :) ) the most I really do not like the way it's mastered. It's far too squished, it doesn't suit the material at all, which needs to be light and ethereal.

This isn't always the case though. This month's Sound on Sound has a piece on the latest Metallica album (I think it's still behind the site paywall unless you're a subscriber) -
I've never listened to Metallica in my life, but I gather the previous album was one of the most infamous examples of "brickwall mastering" ever released, and really brought the "loudness wars" to a head.
The producer of their new album says they only supplied a single master, there was no special "vinyl master" created, so he was bemused that people had been saying the vinyl sounded better than the CD on account of the "vinyl master" having been created with more dynamic range.

In any case, that's from the "JMJ praises Crapwater's work" video I mentioned at some point before. So with Sony as his record company and Perreau employed by them, we're not gonna get rid of him even if JMJ himself said that he didn't like the masters anyway.

But the eternal question remains, are the radio live recordings of Paris La Defense stored in an (extant) lossless format in the Europe 2 archives (or Mike Mansfeld's bathroom)? :punch:

I really can't shake off the thought that this album is more or less "Sessions 2017". While Oxygene 17 is one of his most brilliant tracks in his repertoire, Oxygene 19 has a hint of Bourges going on and the latter half of Oxygene 20 is elegant and moving in its simplicity... the Electronica albums are far far far better than this one.

Which all makes sense, of course, considering that JMJ didn't really feel like making this album and put it together in a few weeks.

Which only makes O17's greatness a wonderful dash of genius. ;)

Oxygene 3 is a masterpiece in my opinion. JMJ pulled off the very difficult trick of a current album with Oxygene style themes without falling back on old glories. As JMJ said it's Oxygene as written today ...

Oxygene 14, 15, 17 and 20 are as good as anything JMJ has ever written. Remarkable considering the tight schedule and pressure. Then again JMJ said these constraints were an
aid to composition, and were similar to the situation surround the recording of the original in 1976.

If anything 'The Train and the River' is closer to Sessions 2015/16/17 than anything else ...

The Train and the River being very close to Sessions 2000/Bourges was the first thing I said about it when I heard it. It's a great track. Though I do have to wonder why this album never got the 5.1 surround sound mix. We went from being promised to having all future albums be in 5.1 to the weird 3D mixing of a few tracks on Electronica: The Time Machine and now were back to stereo and nothing else :|

Well, it was bound to happen. The only album that was actually done in 5.1 was Aero. And even that was mostly reworked old material. And even that sounded pretty forced, in most cases the sounds were traveling around in a seemingly random fashion and the final product ended up sounding very "thin" because if you start distributing instruments across 5 channels whereas they were originally distributed across just 2 you get, um, shall we say gaps.

I'm not counting T&T 5.1 and Oxygene 2007 5.1 because they were (if I'm not mistaken) simple 5.1 up-mixes of the original stereo mix. Something that 5.1 systems can do on the fly.

I believe we are not getting them anymore, because
a) the mixing/mastering process is non-standard and cumbersome
b) the target audience is very limited and you still have to prepare a stereo mix for the majority

I'd much rather prefer to get a digital download of a "vinyl master" instead of a 5.1 mix :)

Yeah the 5.1 mixes weren't really that amazing, but that's just because they were done very lazily. Honestly after hearing some of Mike Oldfield his remixed albums I can't stand it was just dropped altogether. Ommadawn in 5.1 is insane!

Come to think of it, the latter part of Oxygene 20 reminds me a lot of the last part of the title track from Pink Floyd's "A Saucerful of Secrets", which sort of can be interpreted as "a requiem for Syd" (AFAIK it wasn't really meant as one). So I guess O20 can work as a "requiem for Oxygene".

Part 17 is still rockin', at any rate. ;)
