Image

A bit silly and amazing at the same time.
The Matrix and Harry Potter mixed up with a few cheap jokes just to lighten up the mood.
First half of the movie can have a few boring parts but the latter half is like watching a firework of CGI's, specially in 3D

Hunt For The Wilderpeople

A wunderful, heart-warming and very funny film by the director who made What We Do In The Shadows starring Sam Neil and a brilliant fat kid.

Such a shame the director's talent is going to be wasted in yet another Marvel Thor visual diarrhea blah.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

I was never a big fan of Potter and I find this one to be a bit silly. It's as if the camera work is made for 3-D only. It can't be fun watching those long scenes of flying animations without the heavy glasses on your nose.
Other long quiet scenes that didn't seem to add that much to the story. They could've shorten the movie about half an hour.
Fantastic music by James Howard Newton. It made it all worth watching.

Arrival

I'm about to spoil this movie in about 30 seconds...
A confused school teacher is selected to help the military to translate a couple of elephant looking aliens that lives inside a giant hovering stone cage in the shape of a banana.
The whole movie she's struggling to figure out if she had a daughter who later died from cancer or if she will have a daughter in the future that eventually is going to die from cancer.
If I can say anything positive about this movie it's that it's very well played with a bunch of well known actors (and actress) and it has got some beautiful scenes of this crazy looking "space ship".

BLADE RUNNER 2049 (premier)

It's EONS apart from the first movie. Possibly the most boring movie of the year.
The music is ok and the picture is stunning from time to time. Looong slow scenes were you just waiting for something to happen. I saw more then one in the theater that picked up their smart phones checking Facebook just out of pure boredom. The story is pretty clever and of course it has to end with a cliff hanger. If you like drama and soft porn with sexy Ai this is the movie for you because half of it is about this "social hologram" called "Joi". Luc Besson should do something else now because it seems like he's been smoking too much weed nowadays. An ok movie which could've been cut down at least half an hour.

Mad Max Fury Road: Black & Chrome edition.
Interesting. I loved Fury Road and one of the things that made it so good was how it looks: outstanding colors to depict a post-apocalyptic world in an almost comic book fashion. And here comes the black & chrome edition which has the film in black and white.

Having seen the film several times already, I was very curious to see if a black & white version of the film would work. And it does in some places, and in others it doesn't. For some reason it has a silent movie feel right from the beginning. Probably because the magic of Fury Road is that it's mostly images and no talking. The images are shot beautifully and the contrast of black & white seem to accentuate that, which is most prominent in the night shots and some beautiful close-ups of Immortan Joe, the villain.

In other moments, the black & white falls flat on its face. The most apparent moment is when they enter the sandstorm, early on in the film. A majestic scene which is ominous from the moment you, as a spectator, see it. In black and white, not so much. You can hardly see what they're looking at when they approach the storm.

All in all, it's a bit of winning and a bit of losing. But in the end, it's always a feast to watch this masterpiece and any reason to watch it in cinema, I gladly accept.

Denis Villeneuve made Blade Runner 2049, not Luc Besson (he did Valerian which released a few months ago). Villeneuve's previous film was, accidentially, Arrival.

Well, that explains it then. Sorry Luc, make an adult movie next time and all is forgiven. ;)

How was it? I want to see it myself, but I don't want to be disappointed like I was with The Force Awakens.
