4 April 2014 – Forum de Chaillot
2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Round table "Copyright and the financing of creation in the digital era"

Introduction : Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for internal market and services

A legacy of the Enlightenment, copyright guarantees that creators are remunerated, that cultural industries are viable and is ultimately an essential condition of cultural diversity. However, the new digital environment is placing copyright under great pressure, with its effectiveness being called into question, its legitimacy being challenged by large sections of the population and major changes in the distribution of value among artists, producers and broadcasters. How can we ensure that the debate which is beginning in Europe about modernizing copyright consolidates its contribution to the creative economy? How can we encourage new business models and meet public expectations while preserving the rights and remuneration of creators? How can we include all digital actors in its effective implementation?
