I see your point. But if he did the same thing over and over again - wouldn't we get bored at some point? Then people would complain he is doing the same concept over and over again without moving forward. Either way, people would still complain. In the end it's a matter of taste. I didn't enjoy most of his work since 1996 the same way as before. There were some ups, but also downs. But then again - it's a matter of taste, right?

'Conquistador' sees Jarre and Gesaffelstein team up for a track that combines the best of what both producers have to offer.

The track will feature on Jarre's new album, and demonstrates Jean-Michel's desire to work with leading producers from the new generation.

Ja da stimme ich dir voll zu. Niemand kann es allen recht machen  Wir sollten froh sein, dass er nach all den produktionsfreien Jahren wieder mit Spaß und Kreativität dabei ist.

Yes I agree with you entirely. No one can please everyone: wink: We should be glad that he is having back fun and creativity after all productionfree years. :)

Vor allem wenn man sich mal überlegt, dass er so langsam auf die 70 (!) zugeht. Alle Achtung. Especially when you consider that he's heading 70 (!). Chapeau.

I think I would've preferred being "bored" than "meh".

Also, I'm not keen to believe we are hearing much JMJ's work in these tracks. I think it's a 95:5 ratio ("Phased strings, see? Wink wink"). His name is just slapped on some random tracks, because "JMJ" is still a powerful brand. Imagine such a win-win: JMJ finally releases an album without doing much work and some artists will get broader recognition - how many of us have heard about this Gesaffelstein guy before? How many of us are suddenly keen to explore his other works?

I'd love if he focused on catering to his older fanbase - you know, releasing the unreleased and so on.

(My own conspiracy theory is that JMJ has been using "help" like this (in smaller or larger extent) since 1997 - there was a sudden change in his choice of chords and harmonies)

I know the music of JMJ since I was a child of 1 year old. My dad let me listen to Oxygene and Equinoxe, 2 LP's that he bought in 1979. I became a fan since 1991. I like most of his music but not everything. There are some things that I really dislike for example some remixes or parts of albums. But I think that is for everyone the same. Following Jarre blind and like everything that he does is foolish and idolize him. That is wrong in my eyes. Of course there will be good and bad moments in the new collaboration-album. And everybody need to choose for themselves what he like or dislike on the new album. You can not choose for other ones what they need to listen. For example Conquistador can be a masterpiece for me and you but for others can be the biggest trash that JMJ ever made. I see this forum as a place for to share your opinion with others. And respect others opinion of course.

Greetings,

Christophe

:) Yes I agree with you fully. I feel the same, I like most of JMJ had made, depending on the feeling it changes from time to time, but never like all at the same time. I'm also a big fan of other artists (for example, Schiller, Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, Pink Floyd) none of the artists I like everything, usually between 70-80% maybe. I also think that it´s normal. People who like everything're probably in love with the artist... or like sectarian.
I also find the discussion here interesting, but I do not like it so much when people want to dictate which pieces are great, which not. This is still a matter of taste, a matter of current feeling.

Slightly unrelated question: can anyone write down the "lyrics" to Glory? I'm not that good at, you know, voice recognition.

You have a point here. It's quite obvious that Jarre seems to have lost certain parts of his creativity to some degeree over the last 15 years or so. And maybe he turned out to be more a kind of "producer" rather than "composer" nowadays. But I hardly doubt he did all his pre '97-work entirley on his own, too. On a certain level, it's nearly impossible to do everything on your own. That's why artists work with producers, composers, lyricists, managers and the likes. And of course successful artists are brands and some might draw more attention because of their names than others. I would also not be suprised if the fact that he's the son of the great Maurice Jarre had hepled him building his career in the past. The brand "Jarre" was already there and that was a main benifit for JMJ, for sure.

I don't think it is because JMJ doesn't care, but more a question of rights and availability of quality masters.

Wasn't that the time when he and Michel Geiss parted ways? I think that Michel Geiss had a major influence on his work.

The extent of their collaboration/relationship was actually covered in a series of nice interviews last year, very interesting stuff. Here's the thread! http://www.zoolook.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6134

+1. As Black Bird mentioned Schiller: He's currently working on an new album and mostly fans want him to go "back to the roots" again. Why not let him evolve? :?

I don't know what that is, but having just bought the official release I can definitely say that this is NOT the "JMJ extended RMX". It might be an early version (a "demo", precisely) - the structure is different and mixing seems to be slightly off.

A quick diff between the "original mix" and "JMJ" versions:
- the original mix features a key change
- electric guitar and the powerful drums are only in JMJ's mixes

I like the remixes a lot. Ok, the original version is good too, but the remixes have something more that I really like. Still I'm wondered that my wife like this song. 8) :D
