GOL is 20 years old today.
A beautiful album...that has been destroyed by the latest Dadwater remaster.

Personally I don't know what to think of "Sessions 2000" and I haven't listened to it for a very long time... apart from the title 'March 23' in its different live versions. I appreciate 'May 1' and 'December 17' which sound good but the jazzy side of the rest no.

"Geometry of Love" on the other hand is a real success of an album which is coherent from start to end... fitting perfectly into the Master's discography.
I listen to it more often with great pleasure.




N.B. : often I read "Dadwater"... is this almost the "literal" translation from French to English of "Perreau"?
(like in Harry Potter where it is forbidden to pronounce the name of a certain V.......t )

Yes, Dave Dadwater is how he is called in the credits of most albums he did for JMJ

This is still one of the newer albums which I'd love to have released as a LP. Would be a lovely showcase!

Sessions 2000 is such an underrated album. Yes, it's a less ambitious, less significant album and I don't even say it's among his very best, but it's much much better than how much credit it gets. Making a low key future jazz album was a risky move, but since he had a conflict with Dreyfus at the time, so he just followed his intention to experiment without caring if it will be succesful or not.

I honestly love the vibe of this album, so smooth, so calming, so playful, lively, it's subtle, but still rich and detailed. Some critics at the time even wrote that is reminds them of a late period Miles Davis album. For me, it's definitely a winter themed album and the last track is amazingly beautiful.

It's also interesting how it's similar to Oxygene in terms of stucture. It has 6 tracks, the first is a long ambient soundscape, the second is more melodic and dynamic longer track, the third is a bit shorter, repetitive melody. For me, it's a great addition to the JMJ legacy, I don't understand the hate for it.

I quite agree, I don't understand why it's so dismissed. I would go so far as to say that it's structure owes at a lot to his work before Oxygene as it prioritizes sound over melody in many areas. I think a lot of the antipathy towards it stems from JMJ's dismissal of it as a contractual obligation album, and not promoting it.

Right, and it's just a dumb argument, I mean there were countless brilliant things done by artists who were barely motivated, lacked budget, lacked time or anything like that. It could've been terrible or a masterpiece regardless of the reasons for making it.

Some people just hate it because it's jazz, but JMJ became a musician because of his mother introducing him to 1950s jazz artists. He is a huge Miles Davis fan, Sketches in Spain is one of his favourite albums of all time.
Also: Ron's piece, Toyko Kid, Blah blah cafe, etc. jazz is absolutely part of his musical world, just like classical or world music. I totally accept a jazz album being part of his discography. It's not some brilliant masterpiece, but has its place among his albums.
