I guess a replica of Paris La Defense Intro - Oxygene 4 would be really cool, as would an Ethnicolor-Zoolookologie style mix from the same concert. I guess anything other than the "tsut" sampled voice as a lead would sound wrong for this!

As for the others, say like Oxygene 6 or Oxygene 12, I think new versions would be just as interesting as replicas. Like Jote's Souvenir of China, or Matt's new bassline mix of Oxygene 4 are really creative and add something more to the original versions. And Radek is an absolute master of the cover versions too.

Keep up the good work guys, I just thought I'd be cheeky and put in a few requests! lol

(I can't believe I didn't put down my favourite track Equinoxe 5, although Matt has done an excellent 5-6-7 mix on here!)

I have done some covers in the past (never put a lot of work in it though) - might pick that up in the future. Who knows :p:

I'd love to hear what you've done so far, same goes for Jarp, you both know your Jarre. Stick 'em on here so we can all listen.

Radek,

Your always so specific as to what was used for what sound and remember the exact setting parameters. I just twist knobs, move sliders until it's there and save the patch on that synth, never write anything down and hate getting technical. So basicly, I'm useless when it comes to advising others on the sound make-up.

Tinmachine,

Yep, I'd be interested to hear more Equinoxe 5 covers, mainly because I feel it's a difficult one to mimick and relies heavily on getting the timbres right in the mix. Frankly, I think my 5-6-7 is pants and I will only get it right when I have audio multitracking to do the required overdubbs.http://www.mediafire.com/?zzh3y2z41dm Much prefer my older EQUINOXE 5http://www.mediafire.com/?zzh3y2z41dm

I stopped doing covers at all. I even don't play my synths that much as I used to. I put my focus on the "sound"-part of music, rather than on the composition itself. That's the thing that I'm good at (being a sound engineer), so that's the first item on which I judge a track.
A cover - even Radek's ones - will never sound exactly the same as the original. Often, it sounds cheaper, badly engineered and in lower quality than the original. So, if I want to hear the track, I just put on the real thing.

Only the ones that are worked out really originally and have their own "touch" (+ not sounding cheap, well engineered, and in some decent audio quality) really draw my interest. Projects like "The Symphonic", or (a local example) the Dutch boyband "Di-Rect" covering The Who's "Tommy", that's the things I like.

For myself, it just doesn't really interest me to play/record a song that has been played by somebody else before.
The only thing I might record once is my piano version of Chr. 3, but even the idea of a pianoversion of that track isn't original anymore :'').

Cheap sound and bad engineering huh?

Ok "mr. sound-focused" - from this time forwards, not only me, but few of us here are waiting for not-chep sounding and well engineered replica/cover with TOUCH and this dream-analog flow :smoke: you call yourself audio engineer so probably You'll handle it :robertdugenou:

Not particulary calling you, you're a master in replicating already existing tracks. But since I have the original albums, I'd rather play that one than your version.
And, be honest, most covers are sounding cheap, non? :')

(no offense to anybody in here)

I never said that someone might not enjoy listening/making covers. I said I don't like to listen to covers that much, for the particular reasons I mentioned above.
Besides, I said that I don't like it to make covers myself. First, it just doesn't catch any part of my interest at all; second, I don't own the huge amount of analogs that you do. With the gear I have here, I simply can't replicate this analog sound, and since I wasn't planning to do that, I actually don't care anyway.

Really, if you enjoy producing covers, and people in here enjoy listening, great! No problem at all. But as Matt asked me to do/show a cover, I simply explained why I won't produce any new covers to "show my capabilities".

I heard someone on here the other day say that covers were for the talentless. I assume they were refering to a lack of originality. They are missing the point. A cover can NEVER be original - it's someone else's work entirely that anyone else can merely adjust. So there's no aim to be original when one produces a cover.

But THIS area of the forum IS dedicated to covers and those that take interest in them for what they are - nothing more, nothing less. To those who might think people who make covers are talentless, I'll stand my own original compositions up against their's any day.

Replica covers are a test in sound creation and synth programming, coming as close as possible to the specific timbres. They are also a good way to develop technical skills.

They are a thorough test on the ear. As we all know, the available scores for any Jarre tracks are terribly limited - even WFC. Even the most minimal albums like Oxygene have at least 8 individual elements.

They are also a test on the speed of the brain - learning to follow intricate sequences note by note, unpicking them, recognising loop-points and different time signatures and transcribing them perfectly considering individual velocity and note duration.

Think you missed the context there.

Don't really remember what Tinmachine (thought it was him) wrote - but I think he meant to say that if you don't put anything in there of your own, it's a bit of a pointless thing to do. Which is just his opinion and to which I agree.

No, I have'nt missed the context anywhere.

Analog-Umph wrote on a related thread and I quote;

" They're fun tools to use for newbies, the talentless and very rarely the seasoned."

Tinmachine's thread is getting clogged, stick your covers up GeeJee that's gonna be more interesting.

I thought this thread was about cover requests :nico:

I see moderators are slacking off these days. :oldman:

As for my request... well, I don't think anyone's gonna make any other covers than the Oxygene 4/Chronologie 6/Equinoxe 7 crowd so nevermind that. :punch:
