It's nothing special besides some pictures of some old labelled reel-tapes....

I also just bought a copy and I am very suprised about the quality of the rarities, they sound very good, near perfect! Also the disc as seen on the pictures are bloody awesome with that vinyl look, I'm really in love with those kind of discs so it's perfect for me...

Also Happiness is a Sad Song is somewhat (please read extremely) weird, it's just got passed the 1:45 mark, but it's clearly Jarre as he was in his old days, also the voices are very disturbing, but very enjoyable actually... Gotta listen to the rest, but it sounds very, very good so far (I've already listend to everything before the Happiness track), So I'm actually more then pleased with this release (although I do miss the Hypnose with vocal's, I'm really used to hearing it with before hearing it without)

Still have the "Essentials" CD left to do, so i'll be listen to that soon... And for the PS3 user's, I already added all the information of the Rarities CD, so you can download that

I really thought that Jarre would store those things a little bit better then just a metal box (which is standard I know), but the little piece of tape with writing, it looks so cheap

It's quite funny to see the album cover of 'Chronologie' on that poster! But wait, 'Chronologie' is not an essential is it? Silly me!

Just finished listening to the Essentials, but what a dissapointment... All the tracks are the original album pieces, and some are cut short (Oxygene 2 is only the first half, and Magnetic Fields just the first part). Couldn't they atleast have decided to release the: Paris La Defense version of Equinoxe 4 and Les Chants Magnetiques 2, or the vinyl Record version of Equinoxe 5... And adding insult, having the Chronologie Cover on the poster, but not on the actual disc

This Essentials collection feel rather useless, it could have better been it's complete seperate release, and then have a second Rarities disc...

Is it necessary to take everything so literal? It's obvious to everyone Jarre didnt make those remixes, and they're not part of his body of work, which means they are more like bonuses than part of the Rarities selection itself.

It means this is a Disques Dreyfus release. Before anyone complains about Jarre doing this or not doing that in relation to this album (track selection etc), keep in mind this is a Dreyfus project supported by Jarre, not a Jarre project supported by Dreyfus.

I imagine the project came together like this:

Someone at Dreyfus looked in their archives of what Jarre material they had rights to release (it's always nice to exploit a multimillion selling artist, than some obscure jazz artist they normally work with). They found some unreleased rarities and decided to put together another compilation. Since Francis Dreyfus passed away and JMJ no longer has anyone to disagree with, Dreyfus staff approached JMJ and asked for help; "Is there anything you can contribute with?". He agreed, and they put together E&R.

Catalogue releases can be lucrative financially as they dont normally require as much production money as new albums, so it makes sense to release Best Of albums, rarities, remastered albums, box sets etc from time to time. As with previous compilations Images, Odyssey, and Aero, this new one has some added bonuses in the form of actual rare tracks, remastered catalogue tracks, and a couple of new remixes, all supervised by Jarre. It's not another boring rehash of old tracks, even though half the album are old tracks. It could have been worse - it could have been like Dreyfus' 2004 Essential.

My only worry is that if this is a gap filler, how long will the gap be? Will they see E&R as enough for 2011 and delay the next studio album until 2012? I really think JMJ should be smart and have a new studio album to sell when he's touring in the fall. He could sell thousands at the merch stands alone. He should have done that last year, IMO, when the tour was at its peak.

Apparantley, it's quite commonplace - otherwise Universal would have had palpitations after paying for the rights in 2005
Back in 1976 when Vigin were remixing the album in quad, these masters were found under someone's bed !

Wouldn´t have minded if it was my bed

BTW anyone who has the cover of the Rarities in High Resolution..? The highest I can find is 600*600, which is somewhat small, and the rest are from the unoffical release from many years ago
