Well I've just been reading about particle accelerators, you know, as you do and I stumbled across this on the Wikipedia page:

In the next few decades, the possibility of black hole production at the highest energy accelerators may arise, if certain predictions of superstring theory are accurate. If they are produced, it is thought that black holes would evaporate extremely quickly via Hawking radiation. However, the existence of Hawking radiation is controversial. It is also thought that an analogy between colliders and cosmic rays demonstrates collider safety. If colliders can produce black holes, cosmic rays (and particularly Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays) should have been producing them for eons, and they have yet to harm us.

I've heard about this before and it scares the hell out of me.
Scientists wants to trigger a microscopic black hole in a particle accelerator because they
think there're huge amounts of energy to gain out of it.
They're trying to convince the sceptics that these "artificial" black holes will not expand.
BUT how can they guarantee something that nobody has ever done before?
The nuclear power plant disasters at i.e. Harrisburg or Chernobyl should never had occured either...but infact they did.
A difference though if something unexpected will happen this time there's no way back, it can't be undone if it's too late.
A disaster could be growing at a tremendous speed and there would be no way of stopping it.

It's quite possible though. Edgar Varese already did that kind of experiments in the 50s.

As if humans can destroy the earth with such an experiment. I feel sorry for those noobs... they obviously have too much spare time or sth... I'm not worried at all. Let them play around for a bit

Well...haven't physicists been close to destroying the earth many times before by "playing" with nuclear fission and atomic bombs? We have only been lucky enough to know how to control it. Maybe this is the beginning of a new weapon?
Sweep out a part of the world into a black hole...
