So,

Which Oxygene is the best?

1) The original Oxygene - (including all the numerous remasters of it)

2) The Oxygene 30th anniversary re-recording (I'm convinced it's a re-recording rather than a remaster)

3) The Oxygene 'Trance' Mix (yeah, who's gonna vote for this!)

4) The Oxygene 'Live In Your Living Room' version with the additional variations

5) Oxygene 7-13 (becuase strictly speaking it is still a version of Oxygene).

The 1976/77 original album. The first and still by far the best. This is afterall, what started most of us off.

I still think there are small ausio differences between my original LP and the 1997 remaster CD. The LP just sounds better and the Oxygene 2 EFXs sounds more clear on the LP. I'd always prefer that one. However I will never put the original Oxygene up against Oxygene 7-13. It is simply just two different albums  I also like the Prelude and Variation parts from the latest Live performance. Those tracks are also something new.
To make it simple, I prefer the original album over the 30th anniversary album. I won't comment on the Live performance either. that is just another special 8)

Well, the new one is 100% not a total re-recording. :P

I prefer the original, even though I only got the new one as mp3 at the moment, cos that is the one that introduced me to Jarre back in 1979.

This is one of those questions that I don't like. For one, I think the original work itself is a constant and all the ones coming after it are just, let's say, variations (or adaptations) and they can either be good or bad variations (or, you know).

So in my opinion, the 30th anniversary remaster is quite redundant (magically disappearing and reappearing white noise on Oxygene 1 probably being the worst thing in it) but the live version is excellent by itself.

And the trance mix isn't even official.

Of course, Oxygene 7-13 is a continuation, not a variation. A rather good one at that, too.

The original 1976 wooden album, of course. Still the best version - listening to it in today's climate - it seems like music from another world, another time. And that's not in some cliche sci-fi way.

I ask the question because Jarre himself has claimed that he wasn’t 100% happy with the original ‘kitchen’ recording. There can be no doubt that the original is excellent and there will be a natural bias towards it, but sonically is it as good as the 30th anniversary ‘re-recording’? Jarre presumably recorded this new version because he wanted to iron out his own issues with the original?

I do love the fact I can play the new re-recording loud on my headphones and, on the whole, it sounds better then the original at the same volume. However, I absolutely agree about the white noise in Part I. If Jarre was solely responsible for this new version he must surely have noticed it!

Most commentators here have also said they like the new variations from the live recording. But do they add to the original? That’s to say, would we miss them now we’ve the luxury of enjoying them? Is Oxygene more complete because of these variations or is the original still the best?

The original from 1976. (first pressing)

The "new" one sounds not "warmer" at all. They just add some 310 strings, some efx here and there, and add extra echo or so. And I can hear barely the 310 basspedals in the "new" oxygene. The original has more bass, and sounds warmer. And it is defenetaly not replayed, they just added some effects and strings on the original.

?

Jarre would say that because Recording technology has advanced now, back then it was all he had to work with in terms of best possible sound Quality, and he would have been 100% happy way back in 1976 with the recording or it wouldn't have been released,no matter how anyone says it,if your not Happy with something you don't put it out,and as I've already stated in another thread, you will always wish you could of done this or that to fine tune or perfect anything you thought was otherwise perfect because you lose a Subjective view on things when you've been recording day in day out listening to the same thing time and time again. You no longer hear how the general person interprets it,simply because your ears grow tired of it.Few Months down the line away from it,you hear that magic and wonder how it could be improved,or hear new Ideas that you didn't otherwise find,No artist is never unhappy with what they record thye just simply grow bored of it over and over.there is no such thing as a "Perfect" recording, otherwise what would be the point in recording more stuff.

It was the same with the 5.1 technology,Jarre said he always had this idea to "Step inside" the recording and be submerged in the Audio,Technology has now given him the ability to do that, the same with the Audio bit rates and equipment we have now to hear those Albums in the best possible Audio experience we can,Jarre would have never been able to do this with the original recording, because he was limited,he always said the same thing about the remastered reissues of the Sony albums, they had a nicer sonic Quality, pure and simply because they had a better bit depth and wider sound.the same with this New recording, which to me is not a rerecording of the Tracks its a remastered Version of the Original with a few Additional Overdubs of timbres in order to make it sound like its been rerecorded.

Personally I prefer the Original Oxygene, but I like the newer version too,it has its own sound, not as Warm as the original and a wider image, with a few random Overdubs that give it a new edge, the album has no real difference apart from Audio Quality, the newer version is "Too clean" my memories of the Original were sitting beside my Mums old Record player, listening to the Album with all the cracks and Pops and falling asleep to it,many times this happened and perhaps in the same way, this will always be my fond memories of what started me on the Jarre Journey, thats why I will always prefer the original,I recognise the importance of this newer release and I'm glad I'm able to hear "Oxygene" 30 years later in todas technology world, the newer version gives it that updated sound and ambience, but it will still only be simply a "Clinical" recording

Ehm...

You forgot one in the list, the one I would vote for..

The 1975 Painting by Granger called "Oxygene"

;-)

But from your list, nothing beats the original, although I haven't actually heard the new ones yet... You can't replace the original IMO...

Love to see you try and put THAT on a turn table

Thought that painting was called 'Oxygen'?

As far as I could understand Oxygene was a project between Jarre and Granger. Granger wanted Jarre to create music from the skull in earth picture.

The painting was done in 1975... Jarre saw it at an exhibition and liked it for his (unfinished) album he was working on... and one think led to another, but the painting was first completed anyway so...

It is possible that the painting inspired the music a bit, but that's all speculation IMO...

Maybe I'll ask Michel when I'm in Paris next week...

It was information told on the DVD I think. I'll look after it tomorrow to see what it was about and who said it.
