Jarre Sees No Future For Internet

JEAN-MICHEL JARRE is convinced the internet will eventually disappear - because it has become a "brutal" marketplace which future generations will ignore.

The French synthpop pioneer is adamant the web has quickly transformed from an "anarchist dream" into a huge black market where a range of dangerous drugs can be easily purchased.

And he warns that the online phenomenon won't last - because younger generations will reject it as a "sham".

Jarre tells Uncut magazine, "Any drug sold on the internet (is dangerous). The internet being a drug of sorts, is a very effective way to sell other drugs. The sad thing about the net is the way that this anarchist dream has been turned so swiftly into the most brutal, cynical and intrusive marketing tool ever seen.

"I predict the next cultural revolution will come from today's children. They will recognise the net for the ugly, exploitative sham that it is and reject it."

Seems strange comments from someone who relies on the internet for ticket sales and album distribution.

He's fantastically wrong. The Internet will become so integrated that it'll cease to be a concious decision to 'go online' as every device you'll ever use will already be there.

The Internet does hold up a mirror to humanity though, warts and all everything good and bad about what people do is there for all to see, some would like to sensor it and pretend the bad parts don't exist, if no-one can see the bad parts then there would be no desire to make them better.

Over the last decade the Internet has been hugely empowering, when there is a disaster or war being able to speak directly to those affected and get the real picture of what's happening rather than relying on sanctioned media to inform the public provides a level of power unprecedented, no longer are people in different parts of the world strangers that don't matter, you know them, they're your friends, by connecting everyone the world will surely be a better place where governments no longer have the power to do as they please (Think of China and Google). Personally my knowledge of the world has been massively enriched by it, television has become obsolete, millions of businesses around the world depend upon it to sell their products, so the idea that we'll all unplug our computers and disconnect ourselves from the rest of the world is spectacularly naive.

I agree with Qube - he's (he = JMJ) amusingly optimistic if he thinks "the younger generation" will give up Internet - on the contrary. And by younger generation, personally I'm not referring to my generation (born '85), but to younger kids - if we still had a "diluted" encounter with computers and internet as kids, the ones born during the 90's and even better, from 2000 on, are literally hooked into the internet, and they have no intention of giving it up, and frankly neither do i... I see a very Ghost in the shell world coming up (the part about cerebral implants that provide instant access to any network, info, communication device, etc) if anything, the internet will simply evolve from what we know today to a second reality of sorts, just like all those movies and sci-fi stories...

I don't like to say he is wrong but it's good publicity for him, one way another to get in the British press.

The source of this info mentions that the interview is from Uncut magazine. If you read the interview here, he did not actually say those words. The press are turning his words around.

For me it's rather simple. Internet is already here, not in the future. But for the next generation (talking about 20-30 years from now?) who knows what will be the next "wave"?
Eventually they'll learn how to use the remaining 75% of our brain's capacity? I compare the internet with television and video. I think it will stay but fading away more and more to be replaced with something much greater and more meaningful then what we have today and right now just don't have a clue of what it might be. My guess would be 'some' kind of global consciousness in a more organic way but not as how it works today when you can become cheated, humiliated or even threaten to life by electronical devices.
On top of that it's a very fragile system. What happens if we suddenly loose all our electrical power or suddenly experience an electric "peak" that'll burn all the circuits and shut everything off at once? The whole economy is nothing but numbers, credit cards and digital 1's and 0's. We will become more and more tired of electronic devices and in an environmental friendly sociaty there is less room for gadgets. I think of the future as more back to old school and at the same time with a more "sofisticated" technology. Or maybe that's just me?

It was Prince who said something similar, wasn't he??

If this is true why on earth is he using MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, Blog, official website and forum? Not that I am complaining but I still don't think he actually said those words in that exact content.

What drugs is he talking about? Geez... what kinda sites is he visiting?

I don't believe this. That's a remark you might would have expected at the very beginning of the internet. Just like people once said that TV is just a fad. If it's true I'm afraid Jarre has spent too much time with his ancient old ladies, and no longer has a clue about the current modern world.

Internet slowly die, webapps are the future.
That's what I can notice, as a web developer

Yep, of course. He gave the tool/drug for us to use. They are rightly under his name. I will repeat myself, READ THE FULL UNCUT MAGAZINE INTERVIEW AND HE NEVER SAID THOSE WORDS EXACTLY. The internet news is making a field day with messing with his words and I don't like it one bit. Not aimed at you, Velo. But I need to get my point across.

Maybe JMJ spoke in french and later was translated incorrectly.
If... and only "if" he actually said those words we sure would hear them again sometime, wouldn't we?

Agreed.
I don't think the internet will cease to exist, but I'm pretty sure that an internet 2.0 will be launched in, say, a decade. The big pile of crap that is has become should be cleaned up thoroughly.
