Calypso Lead Sound

Hi guys.
I'm working on the calypso 1 lead sound. I think it was made on the D50. As far as I can hear, I think it's very close with the September lead sound.

What do you think? Has everyone already worked on this particular sound?

Using the remix 'Jarremix", it's a double sound, one octave higher and the another one octave lower which doesn't repeat the note played just before. As an example, G-G played by the highest partial is played only G by the lowest partial.

Anyone could help here?

It sounds like a brass sound maybe from Roland D70 ?
I have also head that weird one octave lower sound, that "hangs" - very strange.

I cannot help you much with the lead sound, but out that the synth bass plays on 3 octaves like this:
-o-o-o-----o---o
--o---o---o-o-o-
o--------o-------

Hope you can read it :)

And then there are an eletric bass on top. (or buttom ;)

Thanks man.

For the synth Bass, you mean that the synth bass part written on the songbooks is wrong, as it does not seam the same as the one you gave me?

Yes the bass in the book is wrong - this is very normal :) - but the electric bass seems very close, from what I can hear.

Also, remember the echo on the lead, very important!

I spent 5 hours trying to replicate that stupid lead sound, and still I didn't got as I wanted!
But I made a little "proof of concept" to hear how this thing was build up, I think is sounds cool - maybe I should work on a full version?

Calypso 1 - Proof of Concept (link fixed now)

The steeldrums are made very fast, I might find a better sound..

Oh MG, that's very very nice!!

What synth did you work with for this lead?

I heard so many sound effects used by Jarre, where did you get them? (0,22"s)
I never thought to play the steel drums at the 3rd.

I listened to the original very close. It seems that the 8vb sound disappears just after you stopped, thhedk.

When the chorus follows, it seems that Durand's score is wrong for the melody, too. What do you think?

Yes, you should continue. :fine:

Thanks!
0:22 is a Fairlight CMI sound
"8vb sound" What do you mean by that?
"Durand's score" ??

Well, this lead sound is made with a sound on the high octave and another one on the octave lower, right? I mean, the sound on the lower octave disppears (as far as I can hear it) just after the moment you stopped your demo, when it plays: G E C G E E E C G A F C A F F F C A.... There it seems to exist the higher part of the sound only.

After that, the chorus part, mixing lead and steel drums. When I talked about "Durand' score", I talked about the songbooks(which have been made by Sylvain Durand). When I listen to this melodic part, I don't hear what is written on the songbook: G Gsharp A G F D...

Do you know what I mean?

Once again, what synth did you use for your lead? Really impressive.

Ohh, you're right, the mysterious low sound is gone in that part. But I must admit, that I can only hear it in the start of the "latino mix", maybe it is turned up ekstra much in that mix.

Ahh Durand :o) It's very normal that the scores are wrong.

With Thor I guess? I'm a really newbie in synthesis. Would you accept to give me some indications about how to build this sound?

Really interesting, but why's that? I could thing that this really great musician would be right in his transcriptions?

Analysing the original mix, playing with frequencies, I noticed that the drums of Deschamps plays over another kick drum which is the same as on these songbooks: ¤--¤¤--¤¤--¤¤--¤...

It's 3 Thor synths, one with the brass sound, one with a sharp start I couldn't get right on the first one, and one with the low sound that plays monophonic with long sustain

The Linn-9000 drumtrack runs through the song and then Deschamps plays that mega cool snare drum you hear in the start of the Latino mix. In the Latino Mix it's like he plays a bass drum too, but I don't think it's on the normal version.

I know many Jarre-freak don't like this song very much, but I think it is among one of the best ever. It's very complex and have a crazy samba feeling :)

What a coincidence...i made the sound, exactlly the same way, but with only one thor. It's my first attemp on this sound, i guess with more time i can accurate that stuff...

Calypso 1 Theme TEST

I agree about the fact that the lower part on the original Calypso is less present that in the latino mix.

Actually he does. He plays his whole drums part, with bass drum. It's easy to listen playing with an EQ.

Talking about original, right?

You're right. Deschamps plays ¤---*---¤--*¤---

Another bass drum, mixed softly, plays ¤--¤¤--¤¤--¤¤--¤... behind Deschamps.
