Like you I wasn't that much for the first one. I think the second one is more like the third, maybe you will still like the third more but O think the second one is alot better than the first Tubular Bells.
My absolute favourites on TB2 are 'Sentinel', 'Weightless' and 'Dark Star'. I think I will have another listen to this album as I might start to like some tracks more than already.
The album is build much in the same way as TB3.

The original "Tubular Bells" is very good! But I preffer "Tubular Bells II" and "Tubular Bells III". "Tubular Bells 2003" is also good... 8)

AFAIK, Tubular Bells 2003 is a remake of the very first TB....

TB I is just a little "too old" for me.
I'm listening to TB 2003 from the DVD-collection right know
and I must say I like this one the most just because I have heard II and III much more. The sound is great!
It's very much based on the guitar playing while TB III is more synthesized. So it depends on what I find tasteful at the moment.
TB II is as good as 2003 in my point of view...allthough I only have the live version. 8)

First there was Bells I, and it was the album I heard first so (un)consciously I compare the later albums to that one. With Bells II there are a number of things going on, first the superb recording and production techniques he wanted to show off since "Amarok" and right he was, crystal clear sound, fitting the nature of the album. Because second, he wanted to show (off) where he was at the time with the synths and the whole digital domain. But third he wanted to keep the link with Bells I by largely copying the theme progression through the album.
Bells III has only a remote link to Bells I and was largely recorded on Ibiza where he took some dance influences from the nightclub scene into his compositions. When I first heard the trance/dance influences on this album I thought it was pathetically late and out of place (like when Jarre incorporated scratched DJ effects on Chronologie). But I still like all of them Bells albums, I don't know, he has something :D

I've been an Oldfield fan for many years, but I only really like his 1973-1978 period. The post-1978 stuff is also good, but not mind-blowing (of what I've heard)

Yes, his best. Most later tracks of him become worse.
