Common practice nowadays. Every artist seems to do that. Didn't expect JMJ to do that already. Still don't know what to think of this trend.

BMG acquires Jean-Michel Jarre's entire publishing catalogue
Jean-Michel Jarre said: “This partnership with BMG means a lot to me. Hartwig Masuch and the entire team have been part of my family for many years. Moreover, I am pleased that my publishing back catalogue is sheltered here in Europe and that my work will continue to grow in such good hands. Today is a new start allowing me to develop fresh ideas and giving me the means to explore new territories. Together we will thrive.”

I have no idea. This publishing rights/copyrights stuff is so complicated. I know Sony Music published JMJ records, and then there was Aero Prod which did things and now there's BMG, but isn't that Sony music too because there's the Sony BMG Group:

There's this BMG Rights Management which doesn't seem to be co-owned by Sony

I still hope (even though the chances remain practically inexistent) that all this would somehow lead to BMG re-releasing old JMJ stuff in a more proper way (much like PSB has done with their Further Listening sets and the DiscoVery DVD release last year among others). But
alas.
Complicated stuff, but all in all I do find all these official statements of "85 million records sold" quite amusing.

I've asked a friend of mine who worked at the Dutch music rights what this could mean.
Artists do this for convenience. It saves you a lot of administrative hassle if you sell your rights. Next to that most of these legacy artists think you could get more money selling it than keeping the rights and get the revenue. And such a deal could be millions of euros.
Personally, I hope BMG wants to get some of that money back by releasing some of the old videos, like Finaero said with what PSB did, but yeah, I won't keep my hopes up. A new batch of remasters is more likely.

There's some hope for them to release material that's never been off to the audiences.

Or even just vinyl 'exclusive' mixes along with alternate mixes in general. There's so much stuff which is sort of available, but it's all very much in a gray area...

I noticed a pattern: Dylan's catalogue were sold, 3 years later, A Complete Unknown comes out. Springsteen's back catalogue was sold, Nebraska's making of process was a film last year. Whitney Houston, same story. So... will we see a JMJ biopic next year?

Which actor would play:
- The young JMJ - at the GRM and pre-Oxygene years
- 80s and 90s JMJ - the mega-concerts and then right thru to Moscow and the Millenium
- JMJ today - the Electronica era and beyond
And would a biopic skip any particular eras? Not a great deal happened 2000 - 2015

2007-2015 might be the more interesting period of his personal life with some big personal dramas: death of parents, divorce... Would do good in film.
And for the roles: young JMJ: Thimotee Chamalet.
