Jean-Michel Jarre accused the Spotify music streaming platform of wanting to "do without artists" by sliding songs created with artificial intelligence into the application's playlists.
French musician Jean-Michel Jarre accused the Spotify platform on Saturday of wanting to "do without artists" by seeking to dilute their songs among songs made by artificial intelligence.
The Oxygene composer spoke at a round table at the National Library of France (BnF), prior to the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence, Monday and Tuesday in Paris. He was reacting to remarks about the arrival on streaming platforms of fake songs and noises generated by artificial intelligence, increasing in number. "We have always been committed to supporting the growth and development of artists on our platform, with more tools, transparency, data and new channels to retain their audiences," said a Spotify spokesperson. "We are therefore proud of the distance traveled and remain fiercely committed to the discovery and growth of the recorded music industry," he added, recalling the $10 billion donated to rightholders in 2024 alone.
The complex issue of copyright
Jean-Michel Jarre was also very offensive during the debate on the protection of copyright in the face of the use of works to train artificial intelligence tools. "We will not be able to approach the problem of rights with AI as we did with Gafam," he said. "We'll have to invent something. [...] There is a cake, even before these companies make profits, which is their valuation. And culture must touch a share of it."
“Our friends in this room," he said, looking at the AI entrepreneurs, "have understood that we are very well armed, with our gang, not to fight, but to be paid." He referred, as allies, to other participants in the round table, leaders of French organizations for the collective management of copyrights, Sacem for music and SACD for live entertainment. But Jean-Michel Jarre stressed that he himself used artificial intelligence to compose. "I fed the algorithm with my own music," he said.

What about all the visual artists like myself, that now have to take steps to try to prevent our work being stolen and fed into these plagiarism machines. Which then spew out slop that competes against our own work??

For the Bratislava concert images, JMJ used stable diffusion, a genAI system that has been trained on copyrighted works without the artists permission.
It's all very hypocritical in my view.

I laughed when I read that bit where he says he fed his own stuff into it to help him compose.

Thousands of artists are urging the auction house Christie’s to cancel a sale of art created with artificial intelligence, claiming the technology behind the works is committing “mass theft”.

The Augmented Intelligence auction has been described by Christie’s as the first AI-dedicated sale by a major auctioneer and features 20 lots with prices ranging from $10,000 to $250,000 for works by artists including Refik Andanol and the late AI art pioneer Harold Cohen.

A lettter calling for the auction to be scrapped has received 3,000 signatures, including from Karla Ortiz and Kelly McKernan, who are suing AI companies over claims that the firms’ image generation tools have used their work without permission.

The letter says: “Many of the artworks you plan to auction were created using AI models that are known to be trained on copyrighted work without a licence. These models, and the companies behind them, exploit human artists, using their work without permission or payment to build commercial AI products that compete with them.”

The use of copyrighted work to train AI models – the technology that underpins chatbots and image generation tools such as Stable Diffusion and Midjourney – has become a battleground between creatives and tech companies, with artists, authors, publishers and music labels launching a series of lawsuits alleging breach of copyright.

It appears that Stable Diffusion is subject to legal action.
