I presume there will be no celebration for Rendez-vous hitting 40 next year?
Oxygene is great but Rendez-vous is my favourite Jarre album and Houston my favourite concert ever, I just wish there was more appreciation for Rendez-vous

Would be cool, wouldn't it? Zoolook got a bit of that with this years's 40th anniversary. But I think Rendez-Vous 40th will be snowed under Oxygene's 50th anniversary...

It's going to be an interesting year, Oxygene 50th will a 100% be the highlight of the year. But Rendez-Vous never really got its fair share and if anything, it's the one album that has a ton of issues throughout the past number of years, ranging from that hilarious inept remaster to the album being taken down online without any explanation. But seeing the history of album (Oxygene beside) re-releases and their quality... I doubt we'll be seeing anything to be honest.

At most it'll probably be commemorated like Concerts in China was 3 years ago with an LP release with a poster or somesuch

(Honestly not expecting much more for Oxygene, maybe with more YouTube videos, anecdotes, stories and photos from the time )

Rendez Vous is definitely a great album but I wonder if we get an anniversary version with bonustrack(s).
Or a full audio release of the Houston and Lyon shows.

A Rendezvous 40 photobook woud be amazing.... a double edition of Houston and Lyon, all the best images from both shows. I really like the Bratislava book and assuming the quality of the film/video for both 1986 shows is just too poor to remaster and improve for a DVD/Blu-Ray then a large format, hardback book would be a great thing to produce for the 40th anniversary.

I know this is more about the shows than the album, but both cities are so intrinsically linked with Rendezvous, and both events were 1986, so it's appropriate.

Posting this question on the Rendezvous thread. Can anybody clarify this puzzle?

The disastrous space shuttle mission that Ron McNair was on was code STS-51-L and it took off on January 28th, 1986 and was due to last 6 days (according to Wikipedia).

That means he'd be back on Earth in early February, several months before the Rendezvous Houston concert, that took place on April 5th,1986.

It's widely understood that had the mission been a success, Ron would have played saxophone as part of a "live link up" with Jean-Michel Jarre during the concert.

But how could this be, given the time gap between the shuttle mission and the concert?

- Was Ron to perform and record in space in January or February that year, and the film footage and audio be used as playback at the concert in April? If so, that's not exactly a live link up.

- Did the concert shift dates from a Jan/Feb date to April? I doubt very much this happened, as I've seen no mention of this and the Houston Festival, of which Rendezvous Houston was a part, has always had a spring slot.

- Was there another space shuttle mission planned for late March, early April that would have coincided with the concert, and that Ron would also have been on? This theory means the STS-51-L misson was not the one due to sync with the concert, but after the disaster all subsequent missions were postponed, and with this, the live link up opportunity is lost.

Any theories, answers or clarifications welcome!

Thanks! So the references to "live link up" are inaccurate, it wasn't going to be a real time link with the concert on April 5th, 1986.
