“AI is a tool, not a substitute. The next Gainsbourg has nothing to fear": Jean-Michel Jarre defends artificial intelligence in Cannes
At the World Artificial Intelligence Cannes Festival (WAICF), this Thursday, the pioneer of electronic music defends a humanist vision of artificial intelligence: a new creative tool called to transform the arts without ever replacing the artist.
It is not known if music softens morals, but for Jean-Michel Jarre, 77, it seems to be a perpetual source of youth and experimentation.
From Oxygène, a phenomenon album sold about 18 million copies and which celebrates its 50 candles this year (documentary, book and special edition are planned for this anniversary), to concert events that gathered millions of spectators at the foot of the pyramids of Egypt, the Wall of China or the Eiffel Tower, the pope of French and international electro has always thought of music as a total experience, at the crossroads of sound, image and innovation.
Pioneer of electronic creation, tireless explorer of new instruments, he brought technology into the artistic field long before it became a subject of society. His next album, scheduled for release in 2027, will use "largely artificial intelligence". It is therefore quite natural that he participates this Thursday in the World AI Cannes Festival, a fair reserved for professionals that animates the Palais des Festivals in Cannes until Friday, for a conference called AI - Augmented Imagination where he defends the idea that digital tools can enrich creation rather than threaten it.

Could @jeanmicheljarre be one of the few Europeans positive about AI? Great talk, I’d love to hear more about “the new solfeggio”

Opening day of the 5th edition of the WAICF - World AI Cannes Festival. Once again strong support from the French national & local government entities as well as lots of AI innovation discussed and showcased.
One of my personal highlight has been the unique experience to have dinner with the legendary Jean Michel Jarre. Will never forget his concert in Houston and the recent closing Olympics ceremony in Paris. A true legend!!

Jean-Michel Jarre, present at the Artificial Intelligence Festival in Cannes
By Adrien Mangano ⸱ Monday, February 16, 2026
Jean-Michel Jarre, his childhood memories on the Côte d'Azur and his support for artificial intelligence
The croisette revives in me some beautiful memories...
The pioneer of electronic music remembers his very first live "It was here, on the old roof of the Palais des festivals, that I gave my first outdoor concert" He also does not forget his night trips on the Croisette with Serge Gainsbourg until dawn. Memories for Jean-Michel Jarre that are not only pleasant but that were founders.
You should never be afraid of innovation
For Jean-Michel Jarre, artificial intelligence is a real disruption, a revolution that should not be feared "When we invented fire, even if it is dangerous, it has also allowed a lot of progress in many areas. Artificial intelligence is the same thing. It is absolutely necessary, and it is our role, we, the French, Europeans, to delimit and define the rules. We must stop thinking that rules are obstacles to freedom. Artificial intelligence, for me, is an extension of my imagination"
