I think we have never discussed this properly, so I made it a sticky...

JM has worked with a live percussionist upto 1997, between 1986 and 1990 with Dino Lumbroso and between 1993 and 1997 with Dominique Mahut. Also, Safri Duo appeared as percussionists at the AERO concert in Denmark in 2002. Do you think it really added something to the performance musicalwise or performancewise and do you think Jean Michel should work with a live percussionist again?

Not essential, but certainly makes them more powerful if done properly. In fact, I wouldn't really complain at all if Gary Wallis became a permanent(ish) figure in his concerts.

Gary Wallis is a drummer. He did have a huge drumkit, but that doesn't make him a percussionist...

Bleh, to me drums = percussions.

As for these things you might consider more percussions than I do, they were neat too.

A live drummer gives a concert more power and more personality I think. It makes it more human. And, on a DVD, you have less the idea that you are listening to a ordinary CD with sampled applause. It makes it more human.

In this case, you could also pose the question: do you take a person who plays the arpeggio's and sequences live, or do you use a sequencer.

I think, when you use sequencers for live actions, you should use drumcomputers; when you use a live arpeggio-man, it sounds better to have a live drummer. I prefer the last. Then you get the idea "there are peope playing".

So: A live percussionist is not necessary, but just cool.

To me it feels like a very good idea...as long as the percussions don't "over acting"
or is taking the focus of everything else in the consert. It's absolutely something
I'll remember as a ghost from the 80's. If it works to day... well, ofcaurse it works
but if it's for the better or the worse I dunno. I think it depends a bit on the situation, the percussions.

For me it is essential, as it is a drummer, a bass player and other keyboard players (and obviously, the people that is currently playing with him).

When I saw Solidarnosc, I said I would give a 13 out of 20 to it. If it had a band like that, I would give 17. The other 3 are impossible to give for the reason you all know.

I voted for "Definately essential!", but it depends on the music being performed i think.

It worked fine at the Oxygene tour, and also with Safri Duo at the Aero-concert! (That was the best percussion experience IMO!!) But that was also a little bit different!

But a percussionist is great if it fits the music, simple as that!

I think it gives more life to the music but that has always been the result with live drummers and percusionist.

Hope this is a clarification for some people who mixxed a drummer with a percusionist!

They are the masters of drumming, doesn't mean they fit into JMJ's music but they are cooler than any other drummers
