I can play somewhat well when I've memorized the keys to press. I'd want to read notes, however.

Yeah, I can read sheet music, 3 bars at a time

Oh, maybe I should add that I'm illiterate when it comes to reading music.
I took some lessions in playing acoustic guitar when I was younger but there was never time to (or I haven't had the patience to) -learning how to read music notes.

In fact I assume it is quite rare even amongst professional musicians today exept for classical musicians...but I could be wrong.

No, but I wish I could.

Can read, can write, not as fast as in my teens, altough it's like riding a bike... (that includes all claves and transpositions in - not so much now - real time).

Hm, well, yes, I can, because I learnt it when I was 5 years old.

I can read it, but than it doesn't become music under my fingers. I have to hear it, and I'll play it much better.

I am rather ear-orientated. If I hear a song a couple of times, I've got the basic structure in my mind, and can play some parts. Sheet music doesn't stay in my head. Only the sound. I actually use sheet music to look sometimes wherever I am in the song.

Honestly I have to say I have piano lessons for 9 years now, and I still can't read and play notes dry as someone who has lessons for 4 years!

I can't, I use simpler but not so advanced methods.

Scores are simple... hexadecimal tracking notation, or even midi events management is far more complex - but get a hold of Finale and does scoring for you.

Music notes are dead points on a paper. They are handy for searching where you are, but the music has to be in your head before it becomes music.

In fact it's a very usefull way of writing music down, when this is necessary. (think of large orchestra scores, but also when you want to publish your new piece to have it played by someone else)

Or - the other way round: when you want to know how a piece is exactly played. Of course you can rely on your ears upto a certain point, so can I, but for complex pieces of music it's nearly impossible to play it back exactly the same without sheetmusic.
