It's a question of perspective.
True, the 44.1 khz sample rate and the 16 bit resolution of the CD are obviously not enough to recreate the warm feeling of an analogue recording. But newer systems like DVD audio or SACD take that into account, offer higher sampling rates and higher bit resolution and, to my ears, sound much much better than CD.
But even with a good record player, the LP always looses in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (I'm pretty sure it's not at 90 db), dynamics (the higher the signal-to-noise ratio, the more distinct volume changes you can have) and handling (personally, I don't find the cracking noises, cherished by so many vinyl lovers, attractive at all).
My vote would be DVD audio/SACD, but that wasn't the question.
