The third and final day of IMS 2013 began with the summit room being graced with the presence of legendary French composer and performer Jean Michel Jarre for a keynote interview with IMS partner Ben Turner. JMJ shed light on his time-tested approach to electronic music and his thoughts on today’s landscape.

"Electronic music isn't just a 'genre' – it's a new way of composing and writing music altogether," he said.

JMJ expressed previous frustration by people who may dismiss electronic music as not “real” music because of the lack of acoustic instrumentation.

"Any art form is not dependent on just the instruments you use, but the ideas and emotions that come from it," he said. "It's not the tools - it's the content. The music itself is like 3D without the glasses. It’s not the music that’s electronic, it’s the instruments."

JMJ then dove deeper into how electronic music differs itself from the rest by comparing it to another type of performance-based art form.

"Electronic music is close to the circus concept,” he said. “Every day and every night, it's something different."

Turner asked JMJ what his thoughts were on today’s DJs who continue to push the envelope on the biggest and best light shows to accompany their music: "Visuals are not just the background,” he said. “It has to be considered on the same level [of art] as the music itself."

On Daft Punk: "They're not making electronic anymore; more like disco using live instruments," he said.

Expressing slight concern on how thing’s have changed for music listeners, JMJ pointed out the irony of technology’s impact to sound. "The tools to record music have gotten much better, but the way it's heard by people has gotten worse (vinyl>CD>MP3),” he said.

Closing his thoughts on electronic music, he had a few choice and impactful words.

“As popular as electronic music is, it still has that underground kind of flavor - sort of like jazz."

I wonder what he really thought when he heard about deadmau5 and Skrillex. Something like "OMG What the hell is that noise?"

I lost this relevant news from IMS 2013

JEAN MICHEL JARRE JOINS NILE RODGERS AS AFEM AMBASSADOR

Image
24 May 2013. IBIZA – International dance music advocacy organisation the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM) today announced that electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre has been appointed an Ambassador for the group.

Jarre’s decision to throw his weight behind AFEM was announced at the International Music Summit – dubbed the “TED of music conferences” – in Ibiza this morning.

He said, “My music is electronic and I believe passionately in progressing the genre forwards and protecting the rights of the people who work within it. I am impressed by the creation of the AFEM and that there is a strong group of likeminded people who wish to ensure its legacy is promoted and its future directed in the right way. It’s an honour to be a part of this.”
Jarre is the second influential artist to be named an AFEM Ambassador. At the Association’s launch in January, Nile Rodgers – a producer of this week’s worldwide Number One album, Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories – became AFEM’s first Ambassador.

AFEM co-founder Ben Turner said, “We are honoured that Jean Michel Jarre has agreed to join us as Ambassador. There is a direct line between his ground-breaking work 30 years ago and todays’s live electronic live shows. Jean Michel Jarre is a musical legend, but he is also an articulate and passionate spokesman for the power of electronic music. He’s a change agent of the highest order.”

Jean Michel Jarre first established himself in the French avant-garde before his international breakthrough with the the 12m-selling album Oxygene in 1976. He followed this in 1978 with Équinoxe, and in 1979 Jarre performed to a record-breaking audience of more than a million people at Paris’s Place de la Concorde, a record he has since broken three times. He is estimated to have sold more than 60m records worldwide.

Jean Michel Jarre is a UNESCO spokesman, particularly focusing on two key UN projects “Water for Life” and “Education for all”. He has been honoured around the world and has been inducted as an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur in his native France.

Said Turner, “Like Nile Rodgers, Jean Michael Jarre speaks with the authority of a pioneering artist who is absolutely committed to electronic music. Our Ambassadors will play a key role in taking the message of AFEM to the wider world.”

The Association for Electronic Music launched in January 2013 as a not-for-profit grassroots dance music industry lobbying group. Early this week it revealed its 51-strong international advisory board which spans 15 countries with representatives of every sector of the dance music business from labels to promoters to managers, and includes noted executives such as Patrick Moxey (Sony Music), David Levy (WME) and James Barton (Live Nation).

The coordinators of AFEM are Turner, a partner in the International Music Summit, and entertainment industry lawyer Kurosh Nasseri, who has specialized in the electronic music genre for 20 years, and whose clients include Afrojack, Basto, Deep Dish, Lazy Jay and Paul van Dyk.

Jean Michel Jarre
It's a great honour to be here. I really like the idea of this kind of informal [event], I feel like I'm at home. It's a very cool and informal way where I can meet with people. There are so many established artists or beginners or producers or media, but all part of the same family. Electronic music is probably the most popular style of music today, but also it's still probably the last underground movement, which is not in your face, it's a bit remote to the public eye. I love this situation, as long as you are in a sense not entirely understood or perceived, and it's what I really appreciate in the IMS stuff. At the same time, it needs more understanding from the [wider] audience and if I can contribute to that I would be happy, and it's the reason why I accepted to be an ambassador for this.

IMS was graced with the presence of legendary French composer and performer Jean Michel Jarre for a keynote interview with IMS partner Ben Turner. JMJ is a pioneer in innovation with music, visuals and art which explains his Guinness World Records for the largest outdoor concerts, including playing to 3.5 million, in Moscow. At IMS 2013, he was confirmed as a Ambassador along with Nile Rodgers for the Association for Electronic Music, before taking to the chair for a one-on-one Keynote Interview.

Key Points Discussed:

· "Electronic music isn't just a 'genre' -- it's a new way of composing and writing music altogether," he said.

· Jarre expressed previous frustration by people who dismiss electronic music as not "real" music because of the lack of acoustic instrumentation. That Jarre quote seems to me much more valuable for recorded music than for live music.
You need to get familiar to an instrument before you can match it to the feelings that are the closest to yours at the time you're composing music.

I guess creating music with electronic means is much more like making a 3D movie than creating shadow puppets like you do by playing barbary organ.
