Turntables

I'm saving money for a new nice looking and good sounding turntable for cleaning off my old records and it would be great with some advice. I've read a pair of audiophile magazines but that's about it. How important is the kind of cartrige, tonearm, material in the platter/playing surface, rim or direct drive system and s.o?
Or is the best thing to simply look for a used turntable?
I'm temted by these two:

They have allmost the same equipments exept for the playing surface.
The right turntable is a little more expensive but it's in my eyes nicer to look at. :roll:

I love the ReVoX B795 of my father, the sound is amazing, he told me it was the best turntable in the 80's :P

Rega does also make quality turntables. I can't say what is best between direct drive and belt drive. Direct drive is a magnetic system and no belt will get tender or worn. The older Rega Planar II has also got many good words from the press and there are plenty of them for sale that are used. What also made me pretty hooked on the very Pro-Ject is by the fact that the tonearm is made of carbon fibre. As a cyclist you may know that this material is very well suited for picking up all kinds of vibrations and neutralize them. Well, it's really confusing but some day I'm going to make my decition. Thank's for your viewpoints so far... :D :roll:

Yes that Rega Planar has the classical design. My dad has the Planar II which is atleast 10 years old. It looks 99 like this (the planar 3), just in a black finish. I have no idea what the difference is. They looks simple and so are they but thats also the idea.

No scratching for me...only pure audiophile listening.

I think it's some small improvements of motor and tone arm.
If I remember it correctly you can buy some kit and upgrade the older Planar II
(before 2000) with more "up-to-date" tone arm or/and motor.

Ok if you only intend to listen to LPs

But Even after 30 years of production you cant beat the Technic SL1200 Mk2s,just recently bought myself a pair again after 14 years after selling my original 1210s.....had to dust off my oldskool hardcore records(in excess of 500,boy did it bring back some memories of my Raving and DJ days(1991-1994)I've since found out that many of the records i have are worth a fortune,i have a limited edition Blue vinyl record thats currently going for £100(Armageddon/News at ten for you hardcore ravers out there!!)....I only paid £3 for it back in 1993,wish i'd have known i would have bought 2 copies

that turntable was initialy made for hifi purpose.
The soundquality depends of the cartidge you put on the arm.

you can buy a second hand less than 300€ !

Ofcourse I know about the needle, which you can get for different puposes. On a scratchneedle, other things than soundquality is in priority such as make it avoid skipping and avoid the needle to go too deep into the groove.

But the output on the Technics is said to be a little more critical. I can't use myself as a witness in this case, only what other DJs says, not a good argument I know :wink:

Ortofon used to make a serie called 10, 20 etc. I don't know it's like they are targeting more on the DJ environment.
