Whether techno or hip-hop – electronic music is nowadays the driving force of pop
culture. We have almost forgotten that its origins lie in the WDR’s electronic studio,
which made Cologne to one of the centres of the avant-garde during the post-war years.
This is the story of how a room full of strange devices would become a cabinet of
curiosities, the vibrations of which sent the whole world in a state of ecstasy.
From the beginnings directly after the Second World War in Paris with Pierre
Schaeffer’s “musique concrète”, the film focuses on Stockhausen and goes on to
“Kraftwerk”, from Jean-Michel Jarre and the IRCAM studio right up to Detroit to the
beginnings of techno.

A film by Thomas von Steinaecker

Electronic Vibrations – A sound changes the world - 18/02/2022

The documentary "Electronic Vibrations - A sound changes the world" tells the history of electronic music and how it led us to techno. Director Thomas von Steinaecker takes us through post-war history to tiny studios in Cologne and Paris, to the two visionary avant-garde composers Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

In doing so, the arc slowly stretches over bands like Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk, over artists like Jean-Michel Jarre to our time, from avant-garde to pop culture, from underground to mainstream.

There are interviews with members of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Mouse on Mars as well as Jean-Michel Jarre and electronics pioneer Éliane Radigue.

The first broadcast will take place on February 18 at 10:40 p.m. on ARTE.

Electronic Vibrations — A Sound Changes the World by Thomas Von Steinaecker

Whether it’s avant-garde, techno, or hip-hop, today’s electronic music is a driving force for stylings from contemporary classical music to pop. Born in the aftermath of the Second World War, electronic music first emerged in the Essai studio in Paris and later in Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Electronic Studio in Cologne, which became avant-garde centres. How could rooms full of bizarre equipment become miraculous places whose vibrations excited the whole world? With the participation of Jean-Michel Jarre, Eliane Radigue, Jan St. Werner, Simon Stockhausen, Jaqueline Schaeffer, Peter Baumann, Emil Schult, and François Bonnet
