Friends, a fan named Rob Pietersen, posted in a Facebook group, a different old version of the Zoolook album that he found in a thriftshop, Dutch edition.

I have just compared the 40th edition to my remaster and this is the result. They are seriously taking the piss.

BTW, if you want my remasters, let me know and I will upload them somewhere. I also have the 96/24 transcripts of oxygene, equinoxe and magnetic fields if you are interested, and they are VERY good.

Could you share those please?

This should do it, I have set it to viewer, so I think that allows downloads. If not, let me know I will change it.

What does "96/24 transcripts" mean?

And why not just stick to the original then...? Genuinely asking: what was the idea behind your remaster?

I'm sorry, but they have very audible hiss. Especially jarring in Equinoxe 1, very audible in MF1 intro and MF5 (esp. when the rhythm stops at 0:05).

The first three albums were as far as I know, the digital transcripts of the original master tapes that they used for the 2011 FDM vinyl re-issues. I gather that there was some sort of insert inside the album which gave you a link to the original digital files that they used to make the vinyl's with.

I guess that the tape noise is from the tape, because tapes have hiss, and as the hiss is still present it means that they have not dicked around with it too much and have left it in an original condition with maybe a slightly boosted volume. So as far as I can see these are the closest that it is possible to get to the original master tapes. I think they sound great, sometimes it is good to get some fat in your sausage, it least you know that it is real meat.

I started to remaster albums when an album that my friend and I both like called cure for sanity by PWEI sounded so bad that this could be an easy win, so I remastered it and then kept going. Jarre's albums were not the easiest to gain much with as they were very well mastered in the first place, but I get enough out of zoolook and revolutions to consider it a win.

Put it like this, it is better than the new masters and it doesn't cost you 28 pounds. Be happy.

Oh yes, the 2011 files were Qobuz exclusives, as far as I know.

I like them, they sound very organic. Hiss and everything.

After zoolook, high quality analogue recording became a bit of a moot point as far as jarre went as most of what he was doing was in the digital realm, D50s, fairlights, etc.

Late 80s, early 90s masters were very conservative with their sound levels, maybe because they were still taking vinyl into consideration. Rage against the machine was one of the first CDs that I remember that actually sounded good. So there is plenty of room for improvement on some albums. SO by Peter Gabriel being a classic example.

Ok, so just to make sure: there "2011" files that you uploaded are NOT your remasters, but the 96/24 transcripts, correct?

Thank you very much for sharing this.
I understand the process of doing your own remastering... Sometimes you are better served by yourself. No problem considering doing it with a K7, with a vinyl, especially depending on the equipment used to digitize these media.
The CD is less obvious. We tell ourselves that nothing beats the original.
Then comes the frustration of completely failed remastered editions.
I've done this (my remaster) with the 'Concerts in China' 40th anniversary edition.

Beyond the record quality, I wonder where I was in 1988 for having forgotten the original intro to the strack Révolution, Révolutions. I rediscovered it and realized that I only have versions with the Arabic orchestration.
Was the CD very widespread and accessible in 1988 in France? (wow capricious memory ;-) )

I wonder how many original albums ultimately underwent changes like this?
Like for example Zoolook, quite quickly with the remix version and in a different order from Zoolook and Zoolookologie.
The 2 different mixes of Cities in Concert: Houston/Lyon. The Hong Kong album which is shortened to 1 CD version, or Jarremix with one less mix in second intention.
Besides, this could be the subject of a post... all these differences

For my part, since Zoolook 40 years edition, I have returned to the essentials, to the origins. Long live the breath, the crackling, the authentic.
