Finally got a chance to hear the Atmos mix (limited to 5.1 (though I think it was 5.0 much like WTTOS), but still), and I have to ask... What the hell was the idea in limiting this to a single streaming service instead of making it widely available through a physical means as either an extra disc or separate release be physical or digital? This mix is WILD and sound blasts from absolutely everywhere. Limiting this to such a minor audience is insane.

Yeah, bizarre, isn't it? This album is made for Atmos and it's the worst available format.

Oxymore was 2 years old on October 21. The live version will be 3 years old in January. It's interesting to look back at how the album was recieved and where the album is in his career.

When it comes to styles, Oxymore can probably be described as a musique concrete, electroacustic, industrial and ambient influenced experimental techno album. When it comes to sound design, Jarre built the most complex, layered, detailed sound design I’ve ever heard in my entire life to surround you and overwhelm you in a good way.

I can totally see that for some people, it’s maybe too much, but I absolutely enjoy being lost in the overwhelming complexity of this album. I had to play each track again and again to even suspect what comes next, all the surprising little details. Yes, this is not an album that immediately "clicks". You need to spend time with this album, to pay active attention, to invest energy, but the result is satisfying. I think the most special music needs time. Commercial pop is immediately catchy, but you forget it the next day, because you hear something like that every day. An album like Oxymore is hard to digest, but when you finally do, it has a deep impression on you.

But I believe Oxymore was so import for Jarre’s discography for a very specific reason. Jarre has always been a legend, a very popular artist with millions of fans and people who love electronic music generally respect his legacy as a pioneer. At the same time, in the last few decades, especially from fans who like less conventional music, experimental and IDM fans, critics, you could see more and more cynical comment about Jarre. „Jarre’s innovative times are over”, „Jarre just makes dance music now”, etc.

Seeing the reactions to Oxymore outside of the Jarre fan community was so satisfying. Just read the comments on Discog, people who are generally not huge Jarre fans were stunned by the album, some people called it a Top 3 Jarre album. I love this album but even I wouldn’t go that far. That crowd was surprised to hear a Jarre album being so fresh, so innovative and disregarding any stereotype about Jean-Michel Jarre in media. The critical response was also overwhelmingly positive. I was shocked how many positive reviews Oxymore got in 2022, really. 4/5 by Mojo, 4/5 by Retropop, 10/10 by FAZE (!), also 7/10 by Uncut and Quietus. Not that Jean-Michel Jarre needs anyone’s praise or approval, but it was still nice to see Jarre finally getting the respect he deserves from that kind of „hard to satisfy” crowd too.

In fact, I’ve seen this opinion from some Jarre fans: "Oxymore was made for a different audience, not the existing fanbase". I can see why some people feel that way, but again, which albums were made for the existing fanbase? Was Zoolook produced for the crowd of Oxygene? Was Waiting for Cousteau made for Magnetic Fields fans?

I really like Oxymore too. For me, it has a strong symmetry with Deserted Palace – the descriptive track titles, its experimental nature, an album that is not an overall suite of music working to a theme or concept (ref. Oxgene, Equinoxe, Chronologie)

For that reason, it does fit with JMJ’s canon of work.

I still find the cover artwork a disappointment. For such a rich and intricate sound, the visual is bland and uninspiring. I get the concept behind the cover art is that the wraparound visual is meant to relate to the 360 degree sound design but still. Could do much better. I don’t feel enough was made of the Oxyville virtual world that accompanied the album. This had huge potential to offer the album cover art, a cityscape of old fragments of technology would have been much more interesting.

I totally agree with this. It's fantastic to experience this album in Dolby Atmos. And considering the amount of work he put into it, it's hard to believe that only a limited audience will hear it. Just remember, Armin told us in a short video that when Jarre sent him Epica for the remix, it was more than 100 stems. They had to place each of those sounds around your head.
Oxymore is way too detailed and layered to get the full experince in stereo.

I just love how Jarre can go on one album and limit himself to a couple of weeks and a handful of tracks, to the next one and work on it for years and years and throw literally absolutely everything at it including the kitchen sink. Really hope that SDE somehow manage to get their hands on Oxymore for a Blu-ray release. Their releases are amazing (own Tubular Bells and Lexicon of Love, missed a few others due to the limited nature) and there's such an obvious love for those releases.

Agreed, atmos is the ultimate way to listen to Oxymore and it is so hard to find it.

I wish I could've been there at one of those small Oxymore concerts in France in 2022-23. It's amazing that a guy known for his mega shows did concerts like those.

This is an other thing I really respect about Jarre: He just had this amazingly successful concert, WTTOS and right after, he did an experimental ambient album like Amazonia or the even more experimental Oxymore. He took the time, invested energy into projects despite of the fact that knew they will have minimal succes compared to WTTOS. He spent 9 months working on an album like Oxymore, knowing that he will make some people angry.
He is regularly doing this: intentionally moving to the opposite direction after a huge success. Right after he had those huge concert in the 90s, he worked on albums like Sessions 2000 in the early 2000s.

It's old news, but I just saw this yesterday and didn't see it previously mentioned on the forum, so here it is:

As part of the 2024-2025 season of the MA Scène Nationale in Montbéliard, France, there were 2 listening sessions of Oxymore on 7 November 2024, one at 19:00 and one at 21:00.

20 Songs That Actually Sound Better on Streaming Than CD or Vinyl

https://www.headphonesty.com/2025/06/so ... streaming/

Surprised to see an Oxymoreworks track on that list:
17. “Brutalism” – Jean-Michel Jarre (2022)

Electronic pioneer Jarre composed his Oxymore album specifically for spatial audio, and “Brutalism” shows why. From the first seconds, spiky percussion literally moves around you in wide arcs, immediately drawing in the listener.

The dense techno layers that would pile up in stereo are distributed throughout the sound field. Bass throbs, pulsating pads, and percussive hits come from different angles, pulling you into Jarre’s futuristic world. The rhythmic energy heightens when elements pan overhead or risers swell from behind. It’s almost a physical sensation.
But that's probably because they mean the atmos version, although they don't explicitly say so. Also, they added a picture of the Oxymoreworks version.

I like how so many on that list are the Atmos versions, which I'd say is kind of cheating if you ask me.
But man, to this day, I'm still genuinely so bothered that this albums Atmos mix to the day is only digitally available.
Come on, give me that Blu-ray disc already!
