Sound was good. It helps that the venue was relatively small and closed by 3 castle walls. I said it was good, but also very loud.

JMJ was having fun on stage, laughing and smiling during the encores.

Someone said something right before the first encore which made him laugh out loud. No idea what that person said

I also attended the concert in Stuttgart. What can I say? Essentially, everything has already been said about this tour. I stood close to the stage and had a fantastic time. I consider this tour to be very successful. Visually stunning.

JMJ can finally take a well-deserved vacation in Saint-Tropez now.

We will see what the future brings. I look forward to the video on the Arte channel.

Jean-Michel Jarre celebrates tour finale backstage with Ferrari CEO

Image

For many regular visitors to the Jazz Open, the performance by French electronic pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre on Friday evening marked the highlight of the 2025 festival – a feast for all the senses. The audiovisual wow experience thrilled even those who never considered themselves fans of techno. On this beautiful summer night, with a dreamlike backdrop, the boundaries between concert and art installation blurred.

In Stuttgart, the 76-year-old – who could easily be mistaken for someone in their fifties – concluded his summer tour across Europe, which had taken him to, among other places, Venice, Pompeii, Budapest, Helsinki and Brussels. Jarre and his crew celebrated the tour finale, elated that the rapturously acclaimed performance at the Jazz Open served as a crowning conclusion to the past few weeks, backstage in the courtyard in front of the New Palace – with pizza, ice cream and drinks.

At the celebration, a similarly enthusiastic surprise guest made an appearance – Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna. The 56-year-old had originally planned to attend the Jazz Open on Saturday to see fellow Italian Zucchero, especially as the festival is set to launch a new edition in Modena in the summer of 2026. But the big boss of the prestigious sports car manufacturer – soon to become a premium sponsor of the Stuttgart festival in Emilia-Romagna – arrived a day earlier, and was very glad he did.

Not only did he find the atmosphere in the illuminated palace setting “magnificent”, but he was also left almost speechless by the Gesamtkunstwerk that is Jean-Michel Jarre. Backstage, Vigna and the sound visionary hit it off brilliantly. Deeply rooted in technology, innovation and international thinking, the two engaged in an intense conversation about artificial intelligence, sustainability, culture and responsibility. In the end, they exchanged personal mobile numbers.

Promoter Jürgen Schlensog, who brought the Italian and the Frenchman together (English was the language of choice), once again heard plenty of praise backstage. The evening had been an experiment – not completely sold out (around 300 tickets were still available) – but everyone who was there will never forget it.

Before Jean-Michel Jarre's performance, 16 dancers from Eric Gauthier made their Jazz Open debut – with the high-energy piece “Bonus Track” by choreographer Hofesh Shechter, they scored a direct hit. The audience was captivated. Even Maria Höfl-Riesch, who had travelled from Kitzbühel and is one of the most successful athletes in alpine skiing as a world and Olympic champion, was deeply moved.

Yesterday marked the end of the Special Summer Live Tour 2025.
The final concert Stuttgart kind of brought the whole tour full circle: just like the very first show in Oslo, it had a bit too much natural daylight during the opening few tracks. This is probably the only actual critisism I can tell about some concerts during this tour. But the visuals still impressed the people who where there based on the reviews I've read.

It’s obvious that this wasn’t a full-length tour, but rather a 30-day concert series where Jarre toured solo, mostly around Eastern and Central Europe. From a organizational standpoint, it was a bit of a last minute project, which was mainly organized because he finally got the opportunity to perform in Venice and Pompeii.
And yet, I still see it as one of the most memorable, significant tours of his career. In a way, this was the first real tour of the “new” Jarre. Back in 2016, during the Electronica era, a lot more people attended the shows expecting the “old sound”, what they call the style of the '70s and '80s. At that time, the younger generation, who live in the world of streaming platforms and VR, knew Jarre's name much less.

Now, in 2025, the situation is completely different. Of course, I’m not saying he’s as popular in the mainstream today as he was in the mid 80s, but we can’t ignore the fact that in the last 10 years, since his “big comeback” in 2015, a whole new audience has discovered him, mainly thanks to the internet and streaming services. Especially after Welcome To The Other Side, when he got a lot of attention. I wouldn’t be surprised if many people started listening to him after his appearance at last year’s Paralympics. And for many of those new fans, this may have been their very first non-VR Jarre concert.

As for those who still haven’t warmed up to this newer direction: well, after 10 years, they’ve probably made peace with the fact that there is no point to wait for a return to the “old days” and they’ve moved on. And that’s perfectly fine.

The technology we saw has also come a long way. I think Jarre always wanted his concerts to look something like this, but only now has the technology that caught up with his imagination. We know he’s directly involved in the visual design of his shows - something not every performer does. Many people say Jarre isn’t just a musician, but a showman. And I agree. But I’d say he’s a showman in the best possible sense.
The concert sound quality was also cleaner, better, more refined than even his shows from 9 years ago.

What was also fascinating was how the tour evolved from start to finish. In the beginning, many people described it as a minimalist tour, but by the time we got to Venice, Brussels, and Seville, it had everything: fireworks, massive projections and lights on the buildings. It just shows you how Jarre and his team kept learning, adapting, and improving after each concert. The setlist didn’t change much after the initial concert. 'If the Wind Could Speak' at least got a live version, but Jarre quickly realized it didn’t quite work on stage and replaced it by Rendez-Vous 4, to the audience’s delight.

So in my opinion, thanks to both this technical evolution and the new audience, the tour was a wonderful success. I’ve read all sorts of comments, comments from hardcore longtime fans and comments from people who only knew his name or had heard one or two tracks, but 99 out of 100 were positive. Even that one negative comment would just repeat the obvious: “it’s not like it used to be.” No other real criticism came up, nothing new at least. So from the perspective of the JMJ fan community, this was a very positive tour: it brought together longtime fans, new fans, young and old people. For me personally, it was a huge joy that instead of debates or arguments, we could finally just celebrate together that this man, who is now nearly 77, still creates new things, year after year.

Now, he’s earned a well-deserved break. He even mentioned in one of the interviews that his next project is to rest. :) It’s already incredible that he pulled all this off at his age, through a hot European summer. I do hope there’ll be a good quality recording released by ARTE. It can’t fully capture the immersive experience, but at least it would be something.

Of course, the Jarre-train isn’t stopping anytime soon: we’ve got the Starmus BluRay coming soon, some kind of concert in China at the end of the year, and next year, a new album, the 50th anniversary of Oxygene, and most likely a longer tour. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Jean-Michel Jarre is more than just a pioneer of electronic music. He is a current musician, still adding to his legacy.

I agree. Unfortunately, daylight takes away a lot of the charm from the visuals. It's a pity the organizers didn't move the concert to a later time. Fortunately, the issue only affected the first few songs. After that, everything was fine.

The technology we saw has also come a long way. I think Jarre always wanted his concerts to look something like this, but only now has the technology that caught up with his imagination.

That's a very interesting observation. In the past, Jarre's concerts weren't as technically advanced because the technology didn't allow for it, but they were impressive in their massive scale. Today, it would probably be impossible to organize concerts as large as those in Houston or La Defense for various reasons. Those concerts attracted huge audiences because they were something new, and few artists could pull off such large-scale events. Nowadays, it's become somewhat commonplace; stage technology is easily accessible, so artists really have to put in the effort to impress their audiences. I think that in terms of visuals, Jarre, his team, and Kvant succeeded in this. I believe that Jarre's collaboration with Kvant will continue.

By the way, I attended the Space of Freedom concert in Gdańsk 20 years ago, and I have very pleasant memories associated with it. It was a significant emotional event for me. However, when I occasionally watch clips from that concert, I realize that it wasn't technically advanced. Stage technology has developed significantly since then.

I'm curious about how the concerts in Houston, Lyon, Moscow, Docklands, Gdańsk and La Defense would look if modern technology were applied while maintaining their scale. I can only imagine.

it brought together longtime fans, new fans, young and old people.

There were quite a few young people in the audience in Stuttgart. Unfortunately, in Poland, older fans predominated.

I do hope there’ll be a good quality recording released by ARTE. It can’t fully capture the immersive experience, but at least it would be something.

I'm also really looking forward to that recording. I also hope there will be an official aftermovie from the entire tour that JMJ could use as a trailer on his website alongside clips from the Electronica Tour and the Paralympics.

I'm curious to see how much of this will happen. Jarre likes to talk a lot, but it doesn't always align with reality. I hope the concert in China will finally happen. I also hope that the anniversary of Oxygene won't be celebrated solely with the release of another remaster. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for JMJ.
