Drinking juiced fruit and veg 'cuts Alzheimer's risk by 76%'

Drinking fruit and vegetable juices more than three times a week can dramatically cut the chances of developing Alzheimer's disease, a new study has found.

Researchers followed almost 2,000 volunteers for up to 10 years while monitoring their juice consumption and brain function.

They found the risk of Alzheimer's was 76 per cent lower for those who drank juices more than three times a week compared to those who drank them less than once a week.

The powerful results add to a whole raft of research showing that diet can play a key role in the prevention of the disease.

Previous studies have suggested that eating a 'Mediterranean' diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish and a little red wine - can cut the risk of getting Alzheimer's by 40 per cent.

Other research has shown that eating curry can help stave off the disease and improve mental agility because of compounds found in the spice turmeric.

Drinking more than two cups of green tea a day has also been shown to halve the risk of mental decline in old age by up to a half.

The latest findings, carried out by researchers at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville in the US, were published yesterday in the American Journal of Medicine.

Lead researcher Dr Qi Dai, said: "We found that frequent drinking of fruit and vegetable juices was associated with a substantially decreased risk of Alzheimer's disease.

"These findings are new and suggest that fruit and vegetable juices may play an important role in delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease."

Around 800,000 people in the UK have dementia. More than 500,000 are victims of Alzheimer's, the most common form, which produces symptoms such as loss of short-term memory, confusion and personality change.

The direct costs of treating dementia are estimated at between £7 billion and £14 billion a year - more than stroke, heart disease and cancer combined.

Famous victims of Alzheimer's include former U. S. president Ronald Reagan and the novelist Iris Murdoch.

Doctors agree that the accumulation of 'bad' proteins in the brain are responsible for the memory loss which marks Alzheimer's.

Various studies have suggested that polyphenols - a family of chemicals found in many foods with strong antioxidant properties - might disrupt these biological processes in the brain and provide some protection against the disease.

Antioxidants are known to neutralise the effect of damaging compounds in the body called free radicals which attack healthy cells.

The latest study did not specify which kinds of juices were found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. However it is known that red and orange fruit and vegetables and berries are a particularly rich source of antioxidants.

Dr Harriet Millward, deputy chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust said yesterday: "Many scientists believe there is a link between the release of free radicals within the body and early changes to brain cells in people who ultimately go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

"Since fruit and vegetable juices are rich in antioxidants which 'mop up' free radicals, this interesting piece of research adds weight to this theory. "Previous studies have been somewhat mixed and some even suggested that the benefits of fruit and vegetables were short lived, but this is a long term study following a relatively large group of people.

"Diet almost certainly plays a part in every person’s Alzheimer's risk - and diet is a magnet for research because it could offer a relatively inexpensive way to fight a disease that ruins countless lives and costs the NHS more than cancer, stroke and heart disease put together."

The latest research comes at a time of widespread concern about proposed restrictions by the Government's NHS drug 'rationing' body, which would prevent Alzheimer's patients with mild symptoms from getting prescription drugs which can slow the disease.

Charities, doctors and drug companies, backed by a Daily Mail campaign, are appealing against guidelines planned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence that only patients with moderate symptoms could be prescribed Aricept, Exelon and Reminyl.

If the guidelines go through, primary care trusts will stop funding NHS treatment for such patients.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society said: "This study supports previous research that foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Curry and red wine also have some antioxidant properties and may have benefits. "Importantly the study found that taking vitamin supplements didn't have the same effect - so juices made from whole fruits and fresh fruits and vegetables are best.

"This is an exciting study as it helps build the case that for taking action whilst still in good health may reduce the risk of developing the disease in later life.

"We hope GPs will be able to use this information and pass it on to people who are deemed to be at high risk.

"A Mediterranean diet of lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, some fish and alcohol, and little dairy and meat is recommended, as it is healthy and high in antioxidants. It is also important to take exercise and keep mentally active."

Isn't it what they've been saying for ages? Reducing the time you do this or that or either don't eat this or that and the curve representing the chance of getting cancer before age this and that will slightly bend to the left which means the risk of this and that causing cancer will slightly decrease with zero point this and that percent :P

I never listen to Scientistical stats its all Bollox IMO,one day they'll come out and tell you that Junk food is good for your brain or heart next....or that the transfats in food can cut your risk of Bowel prominotie arse fest cancer!!!!!

I live a healthy lifestyle,I run everyday(about 4 miles on average most days) go to the Gym 3 times a week amongst Thai boxing classes and swimming up to 3 times a week i eat mostly fruit and veg and have a pretty balanced vitamin intake,I only drink water /Milk and some fruitjuices,I never eat junkfood or takeaways/Chocolate/sweets and rarely eat meat and never drink tea/Coffee/ Alcohol or have never take drugs or smoked in my life,I avoid caffeine too, i prefer to eat fresh veg and cook most of my own food rather than bother with conveninent ready meals....I consider myself perfect weight/Height ratio,I havent been ill for at least 8 years and never have colds at all.....I also have regular massage session and detoxing at a local health spa...

I dont need dickheads in white coats telling me that this or that is good for me,because i dont need it...Whilst everyone is obsessed with weight issues or smoking issues i just laugh and see that theyve only got themselves to blame,I cant see how someone who drinks moderate Alcohol can be healtier than someone who doesnt drink just because of certain elements within Alcohol(Ie Red wine)its a joke....

One day they tell you something is bad for you the next they tell you it can cut alzheimers??????how can research based on a certain foodstuff be beneficial to everyone just becuase a few stats seemed to reflect it...

Its a joke....its like saying its ok to be fat because your less likely to be killed by a car than a slim person due to the surrounding layer of cushioning fat!!!!Yes possibly, but your more likely to suffer a heart attack due to excess fatty deposits around your artiries!!!

If people so wish to live ill to their lifestyle then thats there choice and so if i live healthy thats my choice I dont need any overpaid "Expert" telling me I'm less likely to suffer from cancer if i wipe my ass to the left!!!!!!!

Anyone can distuinguish the benefits of healthy eating and lifestyle...

...of course its healthy to eat fruits and vegetables...more than to drink alcohol and smoke!

But people who did never drink alcohol and never smoked,- have died of canser!

To eat more vegetables and fruits is good for the health and make you jump up and down more easy! :)

....and remember children shall never eat light food, but they also need fat to grow up! Fat from fish and oil from vegetables are very good for us!

Its good for the health to feel you have a good time also....that you feel you are loved, and you take the time to care for people around you!

!

I'm not disputing that,I'm also not saying that because i live a healthy lifestyle that makes me immortal...

I just hate all these research tests that cost literally Millions of pounds to tell you exactly what is common sense, who cares if fruit or veg reduces the risk of Alzheimers,if your gene pool is set to contract such a diesease you'll get it regardless of eating 8 portions of fruit a day,It may stave it off but again doing something a certain way could also prolong it,how can these research methods actually prove anything, because people tested on such methods could not actually be tested on the negativie side of the argument, its like getting slim people to sell weight loss products, you can portray them as working because these people advertising it are slim, but have they actually be so overwieght and tested them????probably not...

Yes we need certain fats to grow, but again its about what you yourself put into your body, your body is like a car engine, and you should treat it as such,by feeding it the correct grade fuel and proper maintenance for a long life,I see kids now sitting in the fastfood restaurants they consume probably 75% of my calorific daily intake in one meal!!!then go on to have even more throughout the day and then wonder why there friends pick on then for being fat like its ok to be fat because maybe its in thier genes!!!!Its bollox, our bodies are equipped to survive famine and we should eat to live not live to eat, many people dont think about what they eat other than it looks nice, nothing wrong with it in moderation, but again People should be educated more into proper food and take care and understand of what their putting into their bodies...they dont need scientists and pointless research telling them its ok to eat all this shit so long as they get proper portions of fruit to help prevent Alzheimers or cancer..

People just don't understand the importance of balanced diets and just think its too much hardwork to prepare or understand about nutrition so look for convenience in fastfood, people who do such are ignorant as assume that their overwieght because of their genes its not it because there too idol to know..its the same with Weight loss products, people buy them because they think its ok to eat shit and then use a "Milkshake" for a temporary fix, when if they bothered to understand why they were fat they'd also understand the philosophy of why "temporary diets" do not work and only add to the weight problem,if you eat a correct balanced calorific controlled diet along with sensible exercise you wouldnt need to crash diet...

It is precisely because of the prevalent Lack of common sense in "technologicaly developed / developing " countries/regions that such reserarch and articles exist.
People generally need to be reminded of what should be common sense.

Also of course for monetarory, self importance, recognition issues from some researchers.
AND genuine concern and care from other researchers.

Also, we seem to be living in a culture where we are often "told" what to believe and not believe :
from health, to science, to world afairs ...
Thus such articles "telling" us things, is in line with our current cultural "control" climate.

Does this mean I have to cut back on the whisky?

When tobacco companies start loosing big money, I'm sure it will be good for something and supported by highly credible studies...

If you knew what you inhale walking down a rush our car filled street, you'd never leave home, and BTW, several studies do indicate that exercizing the brain (focusing/learning/calculing/creating) avoids Alzeihmer trough the neuroplasticity effect (the affected areas function is moved to others).

Eating veggies that have been watered with fluor, lead, or worst, created in mercury filled soils, will do you more harm than good... veggies are not what they used to be. Eat at will, moderation in everything, and if you feel good, it's probably the neuroplasticity effect (believing is achieving), not the vegetals...

Kind Regards,
AMR

Yes, it's proved that the placebo-effect very strong is! When you believe in something, it will happen!

Mercury ... prevlent is most baby/infant/childhood vaccines has been cited as one cause of various illnesses
in babies infants and children.
And mercury poisoning in the womb whilst carrying the baby due to for example;
mercury tooth fillings, & "veggies ... created in mercury filled soils."

Individual genetical makeup and immune system of course also has a lot to do with susceptibility to illnesses.

Then the money could be spent on Education into food nutrititionand proper food cooking rather than telling us certain types of food can cut this or that, still doesnt educate people into the benefits of Proper food values and proper balanced intake.

I find it so damn annoying that the Government place so much emphasis on trying to tell us how to live especially with obesity, yet do nothing to educate people into the actual food values,in most western countries it seems the bigger the portion the better we are supposed to feel it gives us value for money, when in light it only makes greedy people fatter.
I get frustrated that you go to a Service station in the UK and all you see is crisps/Sweets/Chocolate all mega bags of sweets, and those (few) that do happen to sell anything resembling healthy fruit are as expensive as a weeks shopping..Yet we're supposed to opt for the healthy choice because we should pay high prices for the privilige of taking the healthy option.I went to fill my car up with Petrol today, the guy in front of me in the Q to pay had picked up a Large chocolate bar, when he paid for it the cashier told him they were 3 for 1.50 so as most typical greedy people do he proceeded to pay the 1.50 and collect the other 2 bars!!!well its no wonder the guy looked about 25 stone!!!!again its sheer gluttony,I have no sympathy for fat people,no Gene is responsible for obesity and i get heartily annoyed by people who say it is,when you look around you and see parents with fat kids you have no-one to blame but themselves when they too are a reflection of their lifestyle.
If people were educated a little more into how they should value nutrition instead of eating for the sheer sake of it then perhaps there wouldn't be such an epidemic of obesity.

I think again being told what we should beleive is down to personal education and how you view the world,I'm not the sort of person who confirms to ideology,I'm educated to a high standard but do not take in most firm ideas of life if you take everything as gospel you'll end up a dummy of society again its down to education, with so much choice in the western world now theres no need to confirm to ideologies..unless you pact to religion. in which case your more or less told what to beleive the rest is up to personal preference
