I am interested in this new feature.
Several mp3 encoders I tried introduced a small silence at the beginning of the file and removed the same small amount at the end of it.
If you try to encode an audio file of -for example- a drum loop which loop perfectly you will notice opening it back in an audio editor that the drum loop has this short silence gap and does not loop correctly any longer.
I just had this trouble few days ago with iTunes 6 for PC (but didn't check this on a Mac)

I'd like to understand if this new feature means that people need to re-encode their albums to have the correct flaw between tracks or it's just a playback improvement.

I don't have an iPod yet, but with its increasing size I am getting interested in it.

No you dont need to re-encode those cd's - I installed iTunes 7 and it automatically determined which albums needed gapless playback, out of 6000 + tracks it only took a few minutes to do this. As yet all albums I have tried have worked seemlessly. Currently gapless playback only works n 5G iPods and the new Nano.

Sharpblue: How did the gapless playback decide automatically which playlists should be gapless. I had to decide for each individual playlist.

Thanks for your guidance!

I don't tend to use Playlists - but I would imagine the gapless playback happens at album level, I will try two tracks from 2 separate gapless albums and see what happens.
